Listening Get Together

Re: Listening Get Together

I've been out for a couple of days. A simple invite to a listening party for the new cabs has turned into a maelstrom. I said too much, tried to answer too many questions. So, until the boxes go out for evaluation I'm out. I'll be back after the interested parties who've contacted me receive them. Starting construction this weekend. I intended to have them about done by now, but business is good. I haven't been getting to the shop until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Time enough to do some customer stuff and that's about all. I don't work late unless it's an emergency. I make too many mistakes when I'm tired.

Leland,

So far you have answered none of the basic questions regarding frequency and phase response, sensitivity, and pattern response of the cabinets at the "Listening GTG" .
In post # 11 you directed us to Talkbass forums for more information, on that forum (and this) you, Duke LeJune, and Mike Arnopol (another builder of Big E speakers) said measurements would be forthcoming.

The "maelstrom" you experienced is just the "tempest in a teapot" that results when someone promises something that is not delivered.

And keeping your fingers is most important.

I've seen to many table saw accidents. Luckily no lasting damage to me-but I have had my share of OH #&@$'s Boy was I lucky :)

As one of my mentors in wood working told me-"The moment you don't feel afraid of the tools-is the time to STOP using them".

I think of that phrase EVERYTIME I turn on a switch to a power tool-and some hand tools for that matter.

Re: Listening Get Together

I'm still waiting to see the measurement data. I want to to see how the Vortex affects the far field response. According to the website I should expect to see the near field response in the far field with this box; As it will transport the sound packets in the vortex to the far field.

I didn't realize acoustic audio was packeted information, say like TCP/IP. I guess i've had this sound thing wrong all along.

The technology has been described as delivering "sound packets" to the audience-and some how the different arrival times are not an issue when doing this (at least that is my "take" from the limited description of how it "works").

I guess we won't see any more information for awhile.

Re: Listening Get Together

looks like they have started their "measurements don't mean much" campaign on their own forums.

The "vortex/packet" thingies transcend current speaker technology, ergo any measurement system used to evaluate "regular" loudspeakers is likewise left on the ash-heap of history.

Actually they are promoting ears.

Unfortunately ears cannot prove their claims, and if any of those claims are true, they will require reworking our fundamental understanding of matter.

Hey for all I know, they have stumbled onto a build that makes a great sounding box, but there is no need to make scientific claims as to the underlying causes of that great sound that require a complete reworking of modern physics.

Ed Zachary!!!!

I'd love for their boxes to be great sounding, affordable and durable. If they'd only back off the hyperbole and tend to the business of getting a finished product out they'd be miles ahead. As it is they've made a huge mud-pit out of which they'll never get. Whatever quality and performance they do manage to achieve in the end will be forever tainted and diminished by their insistence on the "gee whiz" pre-release hype.

I wish them all the best. I just wish they'd shut-the-f*** up with the audiophool claims. Let's get them out and put them up against some of the established systems side-by-side and let them speak for themselves.

OK, then let's forget measurements.

What about some specs/numbers? I keep asking for some basic numbers-but I guess there aren't any.

It is going to be really hard to make much of an impact without ANY information-except the driver size. Maybe that is enough for some people.

Well they did have a gathering and invited people to bring other products to compare to-but all that showed up was DIY products and apparently nobody who has experience with real products showed up either.

Re: Listening Get Together

I did find a measurement of the dual 5" guy.

Scroll down to see it. Am I missing something that the graph goes out to 100KHz for a loudspeaker? And if the response of the speaker in question stops at 20K-then why go further. They must have a heck of a filter to drop at 20KHz like that-when the tweeter is rated to 30KHz. I am pretty sure of the reason the graphs looks like that-so why show it?

Nothing like a 100dB vertical scale to show the "details"

The tweeter used in the cabinet(as far as I can tell-it is the only Vifa that looks like it) 94 dB sensitivity and 25 watts power.
