Anybody tried the combination of Macbook Air and Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-adapter for the more troublesome audio applications that only seems to work with the "good" firewire ports (ie. apple firewire 400/800 and TI chipset pc firewire ports?

my FOH guy at my church has used a Firewire to TBolt interface to record from an X32 into Reaper. most recent generation of MacBook Pro. No issues.

Re: Macbook Air + Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-adapter for audio?

Does it have to be a macbook air, or is it more important that it's a thunderbolt to fw400 cable?

I can also confirm success with a macbook pro and that

Sort of both, since the pro books have the firewire port, it is only really an issue with the air. Just want to know what my options are when buying a new laptop for recording.
Thanks to everyone for the replies.

I know it had issues in Snow Leopard (drivers)! Apparently Apple fixed them in Mountain Lion!

A couple folks on the Avid Venue DUC forum have TB to FW adapters working with ProTools and the FWx Venue cards.

I use the adaptor on my MacBook Air to hook it up to a Presonus console for both Universal Control and Capture without issues. Except one. Tape it in place. I accidentally pulled it and it shut down the console dead. It took a few minutes to bring the console back, fortunately not during a show or recording.

My understanding of it is that Thunderbolt was really developed by Intel as an extension of PCIe x4. The adapter cable itself contains the chip. I believe that Apple has been using LSI firewire chips lately.

I have never personally used LSI firewire chips, only their RAID, but maybe somebody else here has had experience with them?
