McKeesport, PA — June 2017… As part of a major renovation to its auditorium, South Allegheny High School recently upgraded its sound reinforcement capabilities. As the school’s primary venue for lectures, presentations, musical performances, and theatrical offerings, school administrators recognized the need for a quality sound system that offered clear speech intelligibility and solid music reproduction characteristics. This is precisely why they opted for the X5i-P line array system, which is a member of the WorxAudio product line offered by PreSonus Commercial Division (http://commercial.presonus.com/) of Baton Rouge, LA.

Good Sounds of New Stanton, PA, a design / build firm specializing in sound, video, and lighting systems for commercial spaces, schools, and houses of worship, was contracted to handle the sound reinforcement system installation at South Allegheny High School. Company owner Dwight Brown, CTS, who in addition to overseeing sales also serves as the firm’s principal designer, discussed the project and his reasons for deploying the PreSonus WorxAudio X5i-P line array system.

“The school’s auditorium has a width of approximately 80 feet and a length of roughly 110 feet from the stage apron to the back wall,” Brown reports. “The space is outfitted with a control space located in the center of the house that can be used during events for mixing and related purposes. The stage faces into the length of the room and the ceiling height is 25 feet to the floor in front of the stage. Ceiling height decreases toward the rear of the space because of the raked floor.”

“The PreSonus WorxAudio loudspeaker is positioned over the front center of the stage area and is flown using the company’s 8-inch beam clamp along with 1.5-inch couplers and their Minibeam rigging hardware,” Brown continued. “The schedule 40 pipe positions the enclosure at a height of 18 feet above the auditorium floor. We chose the X5i-P because it incorporates five modules into a single enclosure, using a total of five one-inch-exit, compression high-frequency drivers and ten eight-inch cone transducers for low-frequency reproduction. The system’s ultra-wide 160-degree horizontal dispersion and 40-degree vertical throw proved ideal for this space and the rigging was so simple, we were able to put the array into place with one man and a lift in under 30 minutes.”

Brown elaborated on the X5i-P’s dispersion characteristics, “This all-in-one enclosure was a fantastic solution for the space because of the area it covers. With the location of the new array in relation to the front row of seats, the system’s vertical dispersion enabled us to cover the front row without the need for front or down fills and still reach the room’s back row effectively. The horizontal dispersion allowed us to easily cover side to side without sacrificing any seats at the far extremes. The system’s sound quality is exceptional—particularly after it was optimized by Tony Flammia, Director of Commercial Audio at PreSonus.”

With many AV installations, questions inevitably arise. When queried about PreSonus Commercial Division’s support services, Brown offered the following thoughts, “PreSonus is fantastic to work with, as they provide a product that is second to none and customer service to match. Plus, having Tony Flammia on site to optimize the array for that space made the entire install a great experience!”

The South Allegheny High School installation project took place in late August 2016 and the system was put into service shortly after. Looking back on the project, Brown offered these parting comments, “The system upgrade was a huge success and the district staff are completely impressed with the quality of the sound, especially compared to the old system. At first, they were a little skeptical that a single line array could handle the entire room, as other competing proposals included multiple loudspeakers throughout the house. Now, however, they are believers and really enjoy the nice clean look of the PreSonus WorxAudio all-in-one line array design.”
