Los Angeles, CA (October 2017) – FYF (F*ck Yeah Fest), a major summer music festival in Los Angeles, California, recently used an Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW) Anya system to reinforce the lawn stage. The sold-out festival, which featured famous acts such as Missy Elliot, Iggy Pop, Björk, A Tribe Called Quest, Frank Ocean, MGMT and Nine Inch Nails, has been a staple in the music scene since 2004.

Camarillo, California-based Rat Sound Systems provided sound reinforcement for five of the six stages at FYF. Ivan Ortiz, Rat Sound’s Crew Chief for the festival, specified the EAW Anya system for the lawn stage which is located next to the Natural History Museum on the Memorial Coliseum grounds.

“One of the many reasons we decided to use our Anya system was the location of the lawn stage,” explains Ortiz. “With the museum to the left of the stage, we needed to avoid sound slapping against the building’s walls and bouncing back over the audience.”

The lawn stage system was two single column arrays, each made up of nine Anya enclosures, hung to the left and right of the 80-foot stage. Outfill for house right was provided by one hang of four Anya modules. Because house left was near the museum, no outfill was necessary. Ortiz specified EAW KF364NT loudspeakers stacked on top of the subs for front fill.

“The listening area for many of the stages overlapped, depending upon the size of the crowd,” adds Ortiz. “As a result, we had to contain the sound to the space available – which meant that sometimes we needed to shorten the throw, other times go long. Anya is perfect for that application. We created three presets in Resolution software – long-throw, short-throw and performance – and then, with the push of a button, we had exactly what we needed.”

The main throw of the Anya system was 225 feet, which was more than sufficient to cover a crowd that at times exceeded 1,000 attendees.

“All three presets are designed to accommodate what the festival producer required,” said Ortiz. “This gave us confidence that we could handle any sound issues that came up.”
