Food for thought - re Presonus SL

I was playing with the knobs of a Presonus SL at the local Sam Ash today. No inputs but was plugged in for power. As I found myself watching the LED ladders change, I wonder - regarding the resolution of the different features - does that resolution jump in steps, or is there smooth transition from point to point on EQ, compression, etc?
I suppose I could have had them input some things and handed me a pair of Senny headphones or had them hook up the board to my fav QRX's, but....was not that led to do so.

huh?

Dick, you'd know this about your board. Do the changes in EQ and such occur stepped as the meters show, or is there finer resolution as you operate the controls?

Why in the world would anyone go to the trouble of designing circuits which would be stepped? It makes little sense if any and in this case would be detrimental to practical performance.

The answer is no and should be obvious.

Dick, obviously the circuitry won't follow the 'detents' of the LEDs on the knobs, but I wonder what the resolution of the encoders is? I mean, I'm sure it's not audible, but I usually see .5dB or 1dB steps on digital consoles, whereas with analog you can get whatever resolution your fingers can provide.

Given that .5dB or 1dB steps are what used to be standard on the "faders" on broadcast consoles (stepped attenuators, not potentiometers - done for reliability and repeatibility), I think you'll be fine. I would challenge you to hear the 1dB difference reliably in a blind ABX test, especially in a live environment.

I must apologize for the rough tone of my replies. I'll make no excuses. I hope you get the answer you're looking for. I know I've re-adjusted my outlook on digital because of your thread and that's good for me.

PS

I can't hear any "stepping" in the SLive response when twiddling the knobs. FYI, I am not satisfied with the channel strip EQ at all......but I'm comparing it to my Midas console which has very high resolution and crisp response. But then again, the Midas cost 4x as much.......
