I've got a compact system that uses a Mackie M 2600 on (typically) a pair of four ohm subs. Last time I had it out channel 2 remains in protect, with or without a load after start up. Channel 1 works fine and even got me through the night on a two ohm load. Nothing obviously wrong visually with the top off. Any ideas what may be wrong and where else I might look? Thanks!

That cleared the fault! The one on the bottom of the stack in the rear. They sure don't make it easy to get to. Did you do anything to seat it more securely? I'll try it with a load next weekend. I owe you a round next time I'm in AZ. Thanks!

Re: Mackie M 2600 Channel 2 in protect.

The ribbon cables were a common problem on Mackie amps (and other manufacturers seem to have problems with ribbon cables too) Re-seating the cable can help. Sometimes it's in the connection of the cable, but other times, the cable itself is flaky, due to the crimp nature of the connectors. If that's the case, moving it around would be enough to make it work for now, but the problem will creep back up on you.

The problem you are speaking of was in the Mackie 1400/1400i amps. The 2600 never had those problems. The problem that caused the fault like the OP's is a ribbon cable coming completely off. More than likely from a large jolt during transport. I put mine back on several years ago and it has never come back off since.

Re: Mackie M 2600 Channel 2 in protect.

Or lots of small jolts over the course of a decade or so!

I also have a spare rack of M1400i amps, that goes out a half dozen or so times a year, so a gentle reminder of that impending problem is always in order.

As far as the 2600 goes, you gotta wonder why they didn't spend a couple of cents more on a plug with a little plastic latch to hold it in place, like most <$100 cd player have/had. That ribbon cable plug is so short, the ribbon cable almost acts like a spring pulling up on the connector.

Re: Mackie M 2600 Channel 2 in protect.

Cover the join of the connector after it's made in silicon sealant like you would seal round a bath with, we used to do this along the edge connectors of PCI cards on PCs that were moved a lot if you need to remove it the stuff'll peel of with a knife easily.G

Re: Mackie M 2600 Channel 2 in protect.

Could you share *which* cable it is, if you have time? My 2600 is presently going into CH. 2 protect after power up and I can't mix on one NS-10. : )

Thanks

When you open the top of the amp up it is under the top circuit board. You do not have to take the amp apart though. I don't remember which ribbon cable it was but it can be reached with your fingers and reset into place. Make sure your amp is unplugged when you open it!!!! I would recommend reseating all the ribbon cables you can reach.

Looking at the top, from the front of the amp, in the left rear corner there is a stack of three circuit boards. There is a cable between the middle and the bottom. The cable connection on the bottom board had come loose and was only partially connect. As Ryan said check them all while it's unracked and you in there any way.
