Buying Line6

Anyone a dealer or recommend a dealer? I have posted to the Marketplace on this forum and the other; I have emailed Line6 to try to find a dealer or to become one.

The only local place that's a dealer is Banjo World, and when I asked about paddle antennas, the response was "We don't have anything like that."

Try Jerry Athey in ProSound at Washington Music Center (310-946-8808). I did not ask about paddles but the price he had for the single units was very good.

I would recommend instead of buying the Line6 powered antenna (not really a "paddle" and you likely already know my feelings on powered antennas), you look at 2.4GHz panel antennas aimed at the WLAN market. An expansive offering from a multitude of manufacturers, passive, robust and far more cost effective (sorry Don). L-Com is a good place to start, as is Tessco. And of course at this frequency, high quality low loss coax is that much more important.

of course, for many of us the sheer volume of choices is almost a negative, rather than a positive. although i've tried to educate myself regarding all things rf, now that we're talking 2.4Ghz i feel like i'ma noobie all over again.

specifically, what type of cable should i be looking for? and if you were covering a typical 40' by 30' stage and could mount the antennas on the truss, what antenna [or at least antenna type] would you choose?

Something marketed as "low loss coax" - like this:

Take a look at the horizontal and vertical beamwidth specs. It's quite similar to looking a speaker data sheets, often you can see polar specs etc. You'll see that the antennas with the most gain also tend to be the most directional. You don't really need something with a ton of gain for typical applications like we're talking about here. Pick something that's appropriate for a range of situations you'll encounter.

For that matter, for the price of these you could afford a couple different antennas to have some flexibility.

Here's a fairly general purpose omni with narrowish vertical pattern.

There are indeed many options, but in some ways the speaker industry is no different. Choice is good.

thanks jeff. that was actually quite helpful...

and yes, choice is good. that is if you have even a tiny bit of knowledge to know what you're looking at.

of course there are entire industries devoted to selling speakers to those who lack that tiny bit of knowledge. but that's another discussion... :)
