Looking for a PC thats like a mac mini.

Re: Looking for a PC thats like a mac mini.

Why not get the Mac Mini and run Bootcamp with the Windoze OS of your choice? I do it all the time. Macs run Windows just as well as most PCs and in some cases, even better.

Shuttle has lots of options. Asus/Acer/Lenovo all have small form factor options also.

here is one that I find to be a rather good deal if you have a spare copy of XP sitting around.

Otherwise a lenovo option like this is a good choice.

half the price of a refurb mac mini. only thing is the Lenovo doesn't have a CD Drive, but that hasn't stopped me.

If this is to remote an 01v96 with USB and then Remote into it, I would just bypass the headless unit and just pay the extra 20-30 bucks for a netbook. like this Samsung guy.

I have the NC10? i think it (2 years old now) and it works just as good as the little nettop i had in the rack. Pluses are that I actually have a monitor/keyboard to access it if I can't over the network at a show, so I can see whats going on.

I have my netbook and LE1600 in a "Remote Backpack" as I call it that I grab when i know i'm going to be connecting wirelessly to my 01v96. Open up the rack, plug in the cat5 cable i have in the rack to the Access Point mounted in there. Power it up, and tuck it onto the shelf.

Why buy a copy of Windows, Studio Manager runs fine under Mac OS. The bigger issue is probably price, there is probably a cheaper compact Windows box that will also run SM fine.

Exactly.

I'm kind of thinking about stashing the PC in the rack and make it auto-boot and launch SM upon power up. Then I could VNC to it from the tablet.

I also want to have an LCD screen that will attach above the board via a Vesa mount and a keyboard and mouse in a pullout tray under the board. Basically trying to achieve the look and function of a SC48 with my mini-sized 01v96.

On the shuttle PC's, can you take the stand off and lay it flat? I can't find that info anywhere...

Re: Looking for a PC thats like a mac mini.

You can take the stand off the x350 and VESA mount it, but it requires airflow on both sides for cooling (it's fanless).

There are a couple of book-size machines available from numerous manufacturers ("nettops"), but if you want the rackmount monitor and keyboard, it'll be cheaper to buy a cheap laptop and bolt it to a rack shelf/drawer.

Thanks,

I actually want the screen and the keyboard/mouse in different places. Plus I already have a few single space sliding rack shelves to mount a keyboard to. So buying a mini PC is all I really need to make this happen.

Re: Looking for a PC thats like a mac mini.

Tim, I wish you luck.

I wanted the same thing. I had the shelf for the keyboard and mouse and the computer in the rack. then i realized how much of a pain transporting an LCD was going to be and setting that up/down every show I wanted it.

I tried it for a while but said screw it and went for the laptop on top of the 01v96. Faster to set up and works just as well.

Close up I took is the first one.

2nd one shows the full rack, and the old PC i had at the bottom of the road case that is now now longer there.

I am now fully wireless if need be. I can do lights and sound from my LE1600, and start the break music playlist when needed.
