Helical Antenna "Spin" Determination?

Re: Helical Antenna "Spin" Determination?

I was going to post the ARRL link but Radio Free Hank (tm) beat me to it... ;) We have a guy on our show that used it to make a great antenna for over the air HDTV. It's one of our go to guides. In about an hour the Niles.IL mafia will be on hand to demo the new 1000 series. I hear it's 100 better than the 900.... :D

Re: Helical Antenna "Spin" Determination?

From Wiki:

Polarization is defined from the point of view of the source. When using this convention, left or right handedness is determined by pointing one's left or right thumb away from the source, in the same direction that the wave is propagating, and matching the curling of one's fingers to the direction of the temporal rotation of the field at a given point in space. When determining if the wave is clockwise or counter-clockwise circularly polarized, one again takes the point of view of the source, and while looking away from the source and in the same direction of the wave’s propagation, one observes the direction of the field’s temporal rotation.

If this is true, PWS antennas that I've seen are Left Hand Polarization. All A5000's are Right Hand unless otherwise marked on the ground plane. So far only about 6 of the Left Hand versions have been built.

Re: Helical Antenna "Spin" Determination?

So how were the PSM1000s? What transmit antennas did they use? Is the audio quality greatly improved?

My Helicals are the older larger ones. I have 1 Left and 1 Right. Not much good for point to point but far more useful in my current situation. Works equally well for diversity receive and for BTR800s. Just can't stand transporting them. I ordered a Storm case per PWS specs and forgot the antennas from the last few years were smaller so of course they do not fit. I have a feeling that's why they reduced the size. I saw Jim at Infocomm the year before last, and they had a new FOLDING Helical. Funny, I thought of that years ago. Could have made a hundred bucks had I gone into production with them! I can't find them on the PWS website. For those of you making future purchases, it's worth asking about. Should save a ton of space when packing them up.
