Re: Analog Baby!!!

Paul Wolff certainly knows how to make preamps but I find the general ASSumption that console preamps are automatically inferior lacking in substance. I am not a fanboy for Midas but most premium console preamps are approaching near optimal linearity/accuracy. There just isn't that much room for improvement beyond that, unless you consider adding coloration and unconventional input terminations an improvement (note: not a specific comment about tonelux, I have no idea what he is doing under the hood.).

I'd spend the extra money on better microphones unless the talent is locked into some endorsement deal and can't use better mics. :-( But I understand the feel good psychological aspect of using external preamps. and making the talent feel good is a part of it.

Re: Analog Baby!!!

I was just having the conversation the other day about the slowly fading "art" of choosing individual FOH insert and processing to give you the feel and sound you want. I know you can do it with plug ins on some boards with others what's in the box is what you got short of coming out of the board to do an analog insert.
That pictures makes me nod my head and say "that's what I'm talking about"

2 Spare Distressors ($1000 ea)

The big leagues are a bit different than my world!

Re: Analog Baby!!!

In the photo Dave mentions using the BSS London for a new processing technique to control power alley and related response issues. He mentioned this to me briefly when I was talking to him after one of the Soundgarden shows (sub coverage was fantastic that night). I hope he will share more details about this. It was different than his previous implementations.

Re: Analog Baby!!!

I've been using my BSS 901 on my tired old Meyer 650 subs to tighten them up for a while now with excellent results. I guess great minds think alike. Yeh Right...
Peace

FWIW, Dave appears to have switched out the 901s for Aphex Expressor 661's as limiters on the subs. I hung with him for the Lake Tahoe show a week before the tour was over last month and that's what was in the rack.

Also of note - those compressors never kicked in until the end of show when he cranked everything to 11. There was so much headroom with the K1 rig for the venue that pushing the system wasn't necessary. I will say that after the last song when the bass was left to feedback at full gain and Dave punched up the levels on the 24 SB28s along with the 8 Rat Super Subs, the low end was mind boggling. The show sounded absolutely amazing.

Re: Analog Baby!!!

Thx Greg
I have an Expressor that was modded by Jim Williams, maybe I'll give that a go. I guess the 901 will go back to it's old duties on piano

Re: Analog Baby!!!

That has to be the clearest show recording video I have ever heard...must have been a fantastic show! I'm wowed...

I'm actually surprised the mic on the iPhone wasn't over modulating, because it was loud. Loud and very clear. The gentleman on the platform next to Dave's racks was my friend Mark who's attended hundreds of large rock shows since the early 70s. He thought it was the best sounding show he's ever heard and he's not even a Soundgarden fan. He's a squint on the side, designed his own motion laser system. Got to use them the week after this show when the Peppers came to play at our little venue. I wonder if it would have been possible to shoehorn in some K1 boxes into my 40' wide room ;)
