Itech question / help...info..

I am setting up my new to me IT8k.
Using S.A. I set up all my limiters (Peak Voltage & RMS ) and I checked & double checked and everything appears to be correct....
Then, when I disconnect my computer from the amp I went and scrolled through the menu screen on the amplifier and I can see all of my settings in there.
But...There is a screen that appears that says *Clip Limitters* On / Off.
They are set to *OFF*....Should they be set to *ON*???
Why don't I see this in S.A., or am I missing something??

I have not checked my original IT8K that I had Bennett setup for me...I just used the same system settings he came up with when he helped set my rig up.

Any info would be great.
Thanks

Vinnie-

The "clip limiter" isn't in the LIMITERS screen, that's why you didn't see it in SA. It is a separate function from the Peak Voltage and Long Term Power limiters. Don't worry about it.

Have fun, good luck.

Okay...so should I be setting that to *ON* ?
I do have the peak voltage limiters and RMS limiters set.
If you have the peak voltage limiters set they will kick in before the clip limiters so it doesn't make any difference whether you have the clip limiters on or off AFAIK. I'd leave them on "just because" ;) .

Re: Itech question / help...info..

I leave them on also. Why would I want my amp clipping?

Historically you have been able to turn off the limiters on amps that have them.. The idea is that the limiter is set so that it keeps the amp from clipping when producing full rated power (except for the EV/Tapcos that you could use lower limiters if needed). That is a good thing Or is it?

What if you need a wee bit more power and are running a source material that is very dynamic. By turning off the limiter, you could get a bit more power (for a very short period of time) to handle the peaks. Modern amps use this "peak" power a bit more in the specs than the old amps did. They were continuous sine wave type amps-and that is where the ratings come from.

There is one famous amp that has a rating of 640 watts (burst power). But when it is tested "old school" way it is produces 120 watts@8 ohms and 128 watts@4 ohms. Other "old school amps" tested the same way will produce peaks that are more than the ratings suggest. It just makes you think.

But I would agree that in most applications, it is best to leave the clip limiter on.

I don't know how the amp in question respondes to these tests.

Re: Itech question / help...info..

I finally had the chance to pull my original IT8K out of my truck and load the newly aquired second IT8K in the rack with it and Bennett did have the clip limiters *On*.
So that made my decision easy....now there all set to ON :)
Get to try the new setup this Thursday night......hope there is enough wall power for everything!

Well, to be honest, I flipped a coin on that one. I don't know much about the iTech clip limiters, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I don't see anything wrong with them on, but if someone has a good argument as to why they should be off I don't have an opinion. I suppose if there were no reason to turn them off there would be no option to turn them off.

FWIW, VerTec V4 presets do not engage the clip limiters by default.
