I'd like tips or resources on DIY speaker covers. I presume there are little tricks for making the cuts and I'm sure there's an "easy way" and a "hard way" when it comes to putting them together.

Any help to me had?

Re: DIY Padded Speaker Covers

Hi Nathan,

I made some for my speakers about 4 years ago, since they were impossible to source (my speakers are off-brand). My speakers happen to have one handle, and are wedge-shaped, so I designed them by working out the dimension of each of the four sides, and the top, and made a pattern for each with paper. Remember to make the pattern so there is an extra inch or so of overlap. I bought 2 quilted moving blankets for about $20 each from Princess Auto here in Ottawa, Canada, enough to do 6 speakers. Then I took my girlfriend's sewing machine, tried to remember everything I learned in home economics in grade 8, and sewed them inside out. I double-stitched all the seams. I think that's the trick you might be looking for, not sure your experience in sewing. I did one complete speaker cover first, to see how it turned out.

Once finished, turned right-side out, it fit nicely. So I drew a box where I wanted the handle hole, pulled off the cover, and drew a box inside the first box, and cut it out, then snipped diagonal cuts to each corner creating tabs. Flipping the cover inside out I sewed the tabs back, to create a nice finished look. I re-inforced the corners with stitches as I wanted to make sure they didn't rip.

One hint is to use a good, strong needle as I broke a bunch before heading to a sewing shop to get a better needle. And try to use a good, strong sewing machine as quilted moving cloth gets thick when you start doubling it up for stitches.

Also, if I did it again I'd spring for a higher quality moving blanket as the quilted stitching in mine has been damaged over the years.

Good luck, if you're still around on the forum.

Next thing you ladies will be discussing knitting.

For the record though, my mum makes our covers....

Impossible to source? Every pro speaker cover manufacturer (Under Cover, Cloud 9, etc) will make any cover you want. Provide them a CAD drawing or other dimension sheet and they'll have no issues. Of course, it's not nearly as fun that way

+1

With Under Cover I often have just sent them the manufacturer spec sheet. Covers come out great, price is pretty reasonable.

Well yes....I thought at the time I could have them made for me. But back then it was hard to come up with the cash for that (I needed every penny to buy XLR's and extension cords!) and I managed to make 6 covers for about $45. And while I was at it, I made some sleeves to go inside the envelopes that come with Shure mics. Again, at the time I had like 4 or 6 mics so I didn't need a bag just for them, just some more protection for them when I put them in a bag with other things.

This IS a DIY thread, right? :)~:)~

Next topic......knitting your own mic stand cozies! 8)~~
