Headphone for monitoring and such

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

Given your limited budget I'd say the Sennheiser 280's are about the best I've heard at that price.

+2. I like my 280's a lot. Good sound, seem pretty durable, parts can be replaced by user if something breaks. They give pretty good isolation which is nice. Good warranty too.

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

The 280s are a fair bit better than the 7506, which I consider to be unsuitable for any task (insufficient isolation for live, insufficient fidelity or comfort for pleasure). However the Shure 440 are a bit more neutral than the Shure, and might have a tiny bit better isolation.

If you don't need isolation so save you from overly loud bandmates, get a set of Grado open-air phones, as they'll sound better.

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

Matt, if you were happy with the ATs for 4+ years, why change to something new? By now I would be so used to how they sound that I wouldn't change my reference signal. I would buy another pair.

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

And you recommend against the 7506's because of low isolation, but recommend Grado's? That puzzles me.

(As stated) I recommended against the 7506 because they have poor isolation, are uncomfortable, and they sound lousy. If I have to put up with crappy sound, I should at least get some isolation and comfort. If isolation is not a requirement, Grados sound better than anything I've heard.

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

Yea the 280's are a fantastic set of cans. The isolation is great and that's really gonna help you out. Once you get the headphone sickness head over to the head.fi forums and be careful...it can have quite a slimming effect on your wallet. It's like the Gearslutz of headphones. You've been warned.

Re: Headphone for monitoring and such

+1 on the 280's. Also, the HD380 Pro from Sennheiser is not too shabby, and has a detachable (replaceable) cord. I grabbed a factory refurb pair off of Amazon for less than a hundred - I think they tend to have a little more clarity in both bass and upper mids than the 280's but YMMV...Also, for me, they are a lot more comfortable and have less of the 'vise grip' effect on your head...
