Active speaker ?

So if I'm out in the FOH mix zone and my clip lights are in the back of my active speakers how do I know I'm not clipping ?
Is there a work around for this?

Re: Active speaker ?

Tommy,

Set up your speaker and your mixer. Play some music. Increase the mixer's output until you start to see the light (clip, or limit?) on the back of the speaker indicate. Make a note of where that is on you mixer's main output level meters. Now you know, perhaps not perfectly accurately, but close enough.

Use your ears? Proper gain structure?

Evan

Well of course I'll be using my ears, but the hard part is how do I know I got the proper gain structure if I can't see the clip lights ?
Back when I had my passive rig, I could pink noise with a empty load on the amps and was able to see the clip lights in the amp rack from the mix position. But I can't do that with my active speakers, because there's no way to run them on empty load. Also not to mention a lot clubs owners and managers get irritated if you pink noise when they have customers in their place.

Duh, why didn't I think of that :?~:-?~:???: I'm over thinking this and that makes perfect sense
Thanks bro definitely go that route I'm aware it's not perfect but at least it will get me in the ball park.

Re: Active speaker ?

Ahh, just crank it up until something blows. Oh wait, this isn't the DJ forum!

Of course Bennett's answer is right on. Isn't it great when the simplest solution is the best one? Most problems can be solved simply by knowing your system!

Yep I like simple !! and yea I just went the active route, so I'm still learning what it can and can't do.

Re: Active speaker ?

Turn one end around and gaffer tape a periscope over the LED :^)

I'm liking Art's idea

Alternatively, you could open up the speaker and extend the limit LED leads and tape it to the front of the speaker.

Or, you could use a properly located fiber optic cable and route the light from the LED right to FOH!

Or, you could listen. If it sounds bad, it is bad.

Re: Active speaker ?

How about you assign that specific job to a stage hand? After they finish load in:

"You stand here and watch this light, if it blinks more than three times come and tell me"

I've actually used that one! Wasn't that a Tony Orlando song, "Blink Three Times"?

Re: Active speaker ?

While I totally agree with everyone else that it's a matter of knowing your speakers, knowing what they sound like when clipping, and setting your gains right I suppose maybe you could disconnect the wire in the back that goes to the LED and solder a new wire that goes to the front, and install the LED somewhere up there? Would wreak your warranty though if such things concern you.
