I am curious how the K1 subs and Clair i5b are meant to work.. Are they meant to be run like any other subwoofer? Are they just adding to the low end produced by the main PA? Are they there to steer low end ?

Re: Flown Subs or Lows K1 i5B

My observations are with the i5b, and have heard it used for both the reasons you inquire of.

As an extension of the flown array's LF, it's ideal. It puts the 'sub' next to the LF element and increases the frontal area. Sub alignment w/ the flown LF is a now a matter of compensating for group delay, not distance.

When flown sub arrays are used with subs on the floor, LF steering in the vertical plane is possible. I recall someone posting about this in another forum or on a blog, but it's a vague recollection.

Have fun, good luck.

The K1 SB "sub" is basically the K1 box without the mid & high frequency section. They're for adding more low frequency output to the main array where extra mid & HF drivers aren't needed or wanted as well as extending the main array's length for added low frequency vertical pattern control. You can go up to 24 boxes deep with the K1/K1 SB combo and you don't need more than 18 full K1 boxes in any array size, usually less, for the full range coverage. The K1 SB is not a full extension sub when compared to the SB28. So if you want low end down below the 40Hz range, you still need the SB28s for the full ball-rattle effect.

Re: Flown Subs or Lows K1 i5B

Clair normally runs the i5B in 2 configurations.

The most common way is to just jump the 18's together. They both get the same signal and the extra 18 just adds some more oomph. A full "arena" hang of 14-18 deep has quite a bit of LF on it's own.

The second way is to run them as a dedicated sub. They get their own amp channels and drive. However, a lot of people choose to skip the i5B and fly BT218's next to the arrays instead of i5B's. This is my preferred setup. With 8 subs flown per side it really makes ground subs optional.

Even more bananas when you stand next to 3 of them stacked up and realize what a massive system it is, lol!

3 high are only like 5 and a half feet tall.

It's a damn good sounding, and super powerful box!
