I was watching a Doobie Brothers concert and noticed the vocal microphones had rectangular boxes attached to the ends. The mic cables were, in turn, plugged into these boxes. This is the first time I've noticed them. What are they? :?~:-?~:???:

They're the only ones I've had any experience with and they function as advertised. I've only used them in church installs.
