Re: Par Can shell color choice.

There is no logical reason that LEDs should look like PAR cans of old, other than that is simply the shape we expect based on convention.

I personally like the non-polished aluminum cans like the Altman PAR64s of old.

If I were ordering LED cans, I'd want the source-four-par-style die-cast aluminum cans in black. The sheetmetal that China builds their LED cans out of is totally crap and will fall apart in a week.

Black. To be as unobtrusive as possible.for a stage act.

Chrome, for the glitter and dazzle of a DJ!!!

Simple. I.e., are the light FIXTURES part of the presentation or is just the actual lighting?

Re: Par Can shell color choice.

I've never understood any argument for non-black, and I still don't.

The fixtures are there to cast light onto something else. The only people who look at the fixtures are us. Everyone else is looking at the thing being lit.

If you think there's some excitement or value in drawing attention to the fixtures, then you must really like movers. Those are extra-exciting to look at since, well, they move. So then if drawing attention to the fixtures was something desirable, surely someone would manufacture movers in raw aluminum or white. Since no manufacturer actually produces movers in silver or white, it shows that the industry understands that there is no value in drawing attention to the fixtures.

Aluminum can be anodized or painted. I do believe truss should be black too. It's another thing that we spend time looking at, but which has no visual resonance for the audience.

I'm pretty sure that VL (and probably Martin as well) will sell you their fixtures with a white housing on a special order basis. White housings are a pretty standard request for architectural, ballroom, concert hall, and other high end event spaces.

Re: Par Can shell color choice.

If it's slim par / Puck style lights, I'd get black.
If it's normal style cans, either, depending on what you like the look of.

Chrome cans can look pretty rock and roll in large numbers.
4 chrome cans on a tree don't look particularly rock and roll. 30 on a truss do.

Re: Par Can shell color choice.

I’m ordering new LED Par Cans and I have a tough choice…

Chrome/Polished or Black for the shell
What color and why?

My lights are primarily used for lighting up bands and are placed on trees at the corner of the stage.

I would say it depends on whether or not you want your stages to look like you are in the middle of nowhere (a blank slate), or if you want to think of your equipment as "set pieces".

It makes sense to me either way, really. Environment might have something to do with it. Are you doing bars and biker rallies, or are you doing weddings and corporate stuff.

It can be cool to see chrome. It looks great on motorcycles, cars, trucks, etc. So why not on a stage. Shiny truss and all..

My take on it is this. If you want to blend in and have a "bare stage" look, then go with black. It just blends in. For some settings, this is considered "professional" and is a requirement.

On the other hand, maybe you want to have a "look" to your stage. In my opinion though, if you do decide to get the shiny silver lights, then don't half-ass it. A few lights on each side is not a "light show". It is just some incidental lighting. So I don't think there would be any point in showing that off. But if you intend to grow your rig to include a truss some day (any truss, any day), then why not...

There are certain things you deamphasize or diminish on stage that might not be so "nice" to look at. Jabba The Hut, et al. But otherwise...

Re: Par Can shell color choice.

Its a matter of personal taste. I have both. I use the black for uplighting and sometimes on trees. I use the polished on trusses. IMHO I agree with Chris, if you think you will ever use truss get the polished. Looks good as a set piece. Even 8 on a truss looks cool in a bar if you can get them up high enough. Also 8 on a back truss behind the drummer looks cool as well. If you changed your mind later you could always spray paint them black (not really) :)
