Yamaha has announced the new replacement for the 01v96VCM. Available first quarter of 2012. Integrated 16 channel USB I/O audio streaming without using card slot. Improved preamps.

"The new 01V96i features 16 in/16 out USB audio streaming at 96kHz, as well as multi–channel in/out via expansion card or ADAT. The addition of a USB makes high–quality, multi–track recording and playback faster and easier than ever before, and provides full integration with every major ASIO and Core Audio DAW software programs. The 01V96 also comes bundled with the latest version of Steinberg's Cubase AI."

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

It would have been nice if they added an ethernet port for Stage Mix support while there were at it.

The 16x16 via USB is a cool and useful feature however, especially at 96k.

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

I've been a 01v96 guy since May 2003 - one of my units was on the first shipment from Japan. This release bums me out, because it seems to suggest a small band-aid on an old product, rather than the serious redesign I've been hoping for.

When the 01v96 came out, it was the only game in town, and replaced (and bested) a lot of $10,000 analog FOH setups for $2,000. Now, it's an update of a 5-year old update of a 9-year old update of a 13-year old product.

Come on Yamaha - let's repeat the magic of 2003 - how about a Studiolive/Soundcraft SI/LS9/Roland M killer for $5K?

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

agreed on the need for a stage mix ethernet port, even as a card option. I own 3 Yamaha Digital boards; 01v96, ls9-32, and DM2000. The LS9-32 and DM2K are set up out at front of house or monitors 99% of the time, so I can't really justify owning an ipad for it, however the 01V96 goes out all the time for wedding band type gigs where a side of stage mix is mandatory. The ability to mix with it on an ipad without any convoluted VNC and additional laptops would be infinitely handy.

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

I guess there is the LS9-16 for those that wish (like me) for 16 xlr ins and ethernet. I wish I could get a decent buck for my 01V96 so I could get a LS9-16 to suppliment my LS9-32. Wireless on the 01V has always been a drag.

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

Would have been nice to see 16 XLR inputs. And it's kind of vague in the write up, did they move the ADAT to a card only option? 'cause that would suck.

But I like the product refresh and new color scheme.

I saw some photos of the back the the stock ADAT in/out is still there as well as the empty card slot.

Well, that's good. Would have been nice to see four more OMNI outputs though, but hey, in this configuration, it fits quite nicely for my small theatre and our portable sound systems. I think I'll pick up two or three in next year's capital requests :)

Soooo - other than the Firewire band-aid, where is the real improvement?

TJ- what you're looking for is the LS9-16. I don't see the 01V moving up while staying cheap, as it would steal LS9 sales. Plus, Yamaha typically releases a new product, and then a smaller product for a pair, on the same basic platform.

No - what I'm looking for is an LS9-32 format board with a 32X16 digital snake for $5K. The form factor exists in the iLive world, but not for anywhere close to $5K yet.

Yamaha needs to leapfrog - they've been lagging the pack for 3 years or so on many of the price points.

Agreed. I have a small studio theatre that I need a new console in. Looking at the LS9-32 or the Soundcraft SI Compact 32. Both are above the price point that I want, and well above it when you add in the cost of the digital snake box. This leaves me having to keep stringing out copper snakes to connect to the console. I'm probably going to go with the LS9-32 since everything else in the building is going to be Yamaha, and I'll get a new 01V96i for our smallest studio theatre and our two portable systems.

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

The more I think of it, the USB multi track connection and ASIO Core Audio drivers could make this a very attractive mixer. I can see using it for recording to Protools, as an aadio interface for QLab or SFX, and even Smaart if need be. And if the MIDI remote connection in Protools 9/10 still works, the 01V96 makes a very nice automated control surface for mixing and editing.

They say it will do 16/16 at 96Khz. I wonder if you can increase that to 32 by lowering the sample rate to 48Khz?

Re: Yamaha releases 01v96i

My guess is the recording I/O is a stab to stop the bleeding the Presonus has caused.

16 XLR ins, a way to mix via IPad, and digi snake capability would make take it up that notch to keep the StudioLive at bay.

Yomamaha is losing it's lead at this price point.

Just last night I purchased a pristine s/h 01v96 v2 from Japan.... Has anyone successfully changed the power transformer in these? I don't mind running a 240v to 110v transformer but it would be nice to not have to carry the extra iron....

Best,
Michael
