hey guys


so im getting ready to overhaul my IEM system for my current tour. hoping someone might have some tips on setting up the gain structure for these iems to help produce the best sound. i read a review on them somewhere on here that talked about how important the gain structure was...but never was able to find out any more than that.

As with all radio systems you want to send at the max possible audio level, to get the best possible S/N without overmodulating the RF. If the artist want the general mix lower they can adjust it on the pack. You want to hit the "0" mark on the transmitter meter in the loudest passages.
Setup your system so you know how hot you need to drive your mixer to be in the "comfort zone". This means you probably will end up having to dial down the sensitivity on the transmitter, we usually set them to -16db on the G2 system and -27db on the 2050 system to play nice with a Digico.

The other gain thing with the Sennheiser packs is that the headphone amp in the receiver has a bit high noisefloor, which can be a problem if you use very sensitive earbuds.

The quick and dirty way for me to gain stage IEMs is to send pink noise from the console until the output meters read 0db. Then do whatever you need to do to make the IEM transmitter read close to 0db. On the G2 units I always end up at -16. That way you can see how hard you are hitting the ears by the meters on your console.
