I'm having difficulty understanding how a UPS could be of any use in this situation. The PSU in the SL24/4/2 is a universal switchmode - it operates anywhere between 90 and 240 volts - if the volts go down, the amps go up (within that window) and the output remains the same. The idea of preregulating the power seems silly.

Mike, I know very well that it seems like it should be unnecessary. But I can tell you this, based on my own experiences with the SL models, I would feel pretty uneasy running one without a UPS. Sensible or not, I have seen weird stuff happen with no UPS, and rock solid stability with UPS. And I have seen it enough times to make coincidence very unlikely (did some testing with a SL16 leaving it on for several days at a time, guess what, same result, stable on UPS, not so much without). There are various other postings on the net with similar experiences.

Maybe the updated power supply Presonus has started using resolves this, not sure. Hard to say whether the SL24 you used had the old or the new PSU.

Then you're using them for the purpose their name implies Great thing about the PM1D is that the audio still passes through the DSP1D on stage even if FOH dies.

What happens when the DSP-1 loses power? I hope it has a UPS as well.

In the case of equipment with dual power supplies, one should be on the UPS, the other should be direct. A UPS can fail too.

No seriously, I don't own a UPS and have only ever had one gig where it would have saved some boot-up time, but it wouldn't have stopped the interruption unless I had an impossibly large UPS running the entire PA. In fact, I don't know of a single local or regional company that owns one here. I'm sure they have one at FOH for the Nobel show and the Eurovision, but apart from that we just don't see them here.

One thing that helps us at the bar-gig level here is the shuko connector which is a lot less prone to being "tripped out" by someone getting caught on a power cable.

Most newer venues (even places like hotel lounges or school gyms) here have a 230v 63 amp outlet on stage or even a 380v 63amp. Older places usually have at least two or three 230v 16a outlets, and wall power is usually stable and predictable. Generators are mostly used only at mega festivals etc as the hired production is always given access to wall power at the smaller local venues like hotels, schools, clubs, music halls, churces and community centers, etc. In public spaces like town squares, etc one can request that the city provide a temporary mobile outlet box that is connected to the closest cental connection point. One 230v 32 amp + one 230v 16 amp seems to be the norm for those.

We have some seriously crust old community halls where the power is like a couple of 230v 10 amp outlets, sometimes with no ground. Those royally suck. I don't exactly drag my PM1D to the type of gigs that are usually hosted in those places...


Either we're gamblers or we're just lucky enough to have the power stuff pretty well sorted ~:-o~.

Not sure what they did this year, but last year both those events didn't include a UPS at FOH/Mon. It did include backup consoles running in parallel. I was told that thery feared a console going down due to other issues more than a power related issue. This might have something to do with that companys rather unpleasant Digico-experience from some years back where they lost all input gain and trims in a live national tv event....

And yes, power here is generally considered to be safe. I've only had two power related issues in the last years, and both of them were because someone plugged something into my power distro without asking first.
