Hello Guys,

I am hoping someone can help me out with this. I am running Studio Manager with our 01v96. Using a laptop connected to the 01v via usb cable, Belkin Router, tight VNC Server on the laptop and tablet is a Motion Computing with VNC Client. I get everything to connect properly and I have control and is just fine when there is not much going on BUT when the band starts (16 channels) playing the response time on the remote is so slow it is unusable. Meters lag, when I try to make an adjustment it is 3 seconds behind, etc. When I have play back music going (one channel) response time is fine.

I have used this setup in the past with no issues but with two difference. I was using a older gateway tablet instead of the Motions Tablet and the Laptop was an older Toshiba Satellite running XP. I would try my old setup but the older gateway basically died.

What do you think could be causing this? If it is the router I was thinking of getting something better but did not want to spend the $'s if that is not the issue. This router has been acceptable in the past.

Some other info.

Toshiba Satellite Laptop Running Windows 7 64bit
Tablet is running XP

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

VNC misconfiguration. Sounds like you're trying to run too many colors or too high of a resolution. Lower the settings and it will be much faster.

Since both computers are running Windows, there is absolutely no reason not to be using Remote Desktop. It's faster than any VNC client. Yes, I know, it locks the screen of the computer being remote accessed.

It does indeed sound like too little bandwidth for the application. One way to check would be to use task manager and look at the bandwidth utilization on the tablet while VNC is running.

Another thought: is the laptop connected to the router via a cable or wireless? Two devices using WiFi cannot talk to each other directly (unless they are in ad-hoc mode). For the tablet to talk to the laptop if both were wireless, the tablet must first talk to the access point which then relays the message to the laptop.

Personally, I would try a USB to ethernet adapter and see if you cannot connect to it directly that way. John Huntington did that for his time lapse camera and seemed to have good results.

Some time ago I tried an AnywhereUSB 5 device

over wired and wireless but without much luck. Some messages would get through but the 01v96 would never complete a sync with StudioManager. I played with MTU packet sizes and more. From what I've heard, there is something about the way StudioManager polls the 01v96. It expects a response back within a certain amount of time, and remote USB devices often cause this time to be exceeded.

Silas, you might be onto something. The new laptop is a 16:9 screen and the tablet is 4:3. Would not have thought that would have mattered but maybe that is what is going on. The older laptop and gateway tablet were both 4:3 screens.

For any VNC connection the factory methods work the best. That's Remote Desktop in your case. I use RealVNC for my setup, but I am using a windows tablet talking to a Mac Mini running SM. It runs fast enough to use, but it is a bit laggy. I'll turn off the meters in SM after a song or two and it speeds up considerably.

are you sure you're not operating on the same wireless channel at the location?

everywhere I go first thing I do when setting up my 01v96 and wireless is to check the local wifi on my phone with this app.

https://market.android.com/details?...SwyLDEsImNvbS5mYXJwcm9jLndpZmkuYW5hbHl6ZXIiXQ..

find out if they're using 1, 6, or 11. or if they're a weirder person and using one of the other channels.

also are you running in 2.4 or 5ghz on the wireless? I've had better luck in my area running at 5ghz. Might want to try that.

Re: 01v96 with VNC/Remote SLOW

Well, I think I might have figured out what is going on. I could not get remote desktop to work. We are assuming that was because of an XP (tablet) and Win7 (Laptop) issue. So we ensured everything was as right as it could be with that setup using Tight VNC. Tried it again & still same major latency issues when 16 channels were all going. Can't turn the meters off in Studio Manager with the 01V96, SO, broke out the older Laptop running XP (it is on it's last leg so that is why I hesitate to use it) hook it all up and everything now seems to work. There is still a slight bit of latency but it is functional and performs basically as it did with my older Gateway Tablet. Probably best it is going to get with this setup & router. So I have concluded that the issue is between Win7 & XP somewhere. Looks like I may need to upgrade to a tablet running Win7 at some point.

Thanks for all the replies.

Re: 01v96 with VNC/Remote SLOW

Win7 handles networking much differently (at least to the user) than XP or previous versions of Windows. Versions of 7 other than "pro" do not see any computers or devices that are not Win7. The "simple network configuration" that was in XP no longer exists.

Yes you can. File>System Setup>Level Meters

It's a check box in the bottom right corner. After I get things up and running I click this off for a speedy UI.

Awesome! Thanks Tim. I thought you could but could not find it. I looked all over but just could not get to the right screen. Thanks again!
