I know it's behringer but...

Re: I know it's behringer but...

The new XENYX iX Series, which include the XENYX iX3242USB, iX2442USB and iX1642USB, feature a built-in iPad docking station designed to send signal to and from the iPad with a wide range of routing options.

Does this mean all of the audio processing is handled by the iPad? If that's the case, there is no way in hell I'd trust this product. Yeah, the iPad is great and all, but it's not perfect. iPad apps do crash on occasion, and if that takes out the entire audio chain, that's insane. Hopefully that's not the case.

From a durability standpoint, one would think a built in screen would make more sense, and then use the iPad as a remote station. Now, if you pull the iPad to remote mix, you have lost all screen control at the desk.

There's all kinds of audio stuff involving the Ipad coming out.
One company has 24 or 48 track recording system on it.
Mackie has an interesting Ipad mixer coming as well.
(and it works wirelessly)

As opposed to all the "perfect" solutions we now have?

Indeed. At least if the iPad takes a dirt nap, you can run down the street to get another one and be back up and running quickly. The same can't be said under most circumstances for traditional digital consoles if your touchscreen/UI died.

Neat idea. I expect to see a lot of these.

Until Apple changes the form factor of the IPad in 3 years and they don't fit anymore. I have an IPod dock in my car that now no longer works with my IPhone.

At least with a complete system from a manufacturer, they are responsible for parts availability, and we can be reasonably confident of a 10-year life. Relying on consumer products that change at the speed of light is dangerous.

I also wonder how many folks will dedicate an IPad to a device like this vs. using their day to day IPad. If not, all the IOS updates and lag before the vendor's app is supported will make a lot of folks unhappy when their mixer/multitrack recorder stop working.

No one has to buy a new iPad just because a new one comes out, especially if the one you are using does the job.

What I've seen happen with phones is for something to happen to it and you have to buy a new one or get a warranty replacement and what you get is a 'comparable' newer model. I'm already running into issues with AV systems where you need to have two different iPad docks and cables and a 'universal' iPhone/iPod dock with five different inserts just to handle products from the last two or three years. And every time I get a new phone, which even if they old one still works I do every couple of years to take advantage of the evolving technology, I then also have to get a new dock, charger, case, etc. The mindset of the consumer electronics world is to create markets for new products, the faster they can make you want or need the latest and greatest, the more products they sell. When you start basing products on consumer electronics that 'planned obsolescence' perspective, either real or perceived, seems to come with it.
