Amps with clip indicators that fire at 3dB below actual clip?

Re: Amps with clip indicators that fire at 3dB below actual clip?

And Crown still claims that damping factors more than a couple hundred actually matters... it's what marketing pukes do to try to sell otherwise similar gear to the sheeple.

If they understood the technology they probably wouldn't be working in marketing... and if the sheeple were smarter they'd boycott the merchants of misinformation, but customers don't really want to understand, they mainly want to feel good about whatever they buy. :)

Competing in a marketplace dominated by advertising impressions and spin, can be frustrating for the honest players (ask me how I know).

This thread, along with some others I have read, got me wondering if Yorkville has gone through some changes in their marketing dept.

Re: Amps with clip indicators that fire at 3dB below actual clip?

The thing is, it seems like they'd be "shooting themselves in the foot" by making it appear their amps have less headroom. Seems to me they'd want to make it appear as if they had more by lighting the clips lights with a higher amount of distortion. Of course, I still haven't received confirmation that they in fact do that with their amps. Interestingly, their manuals say nothing about clip lights lighting 3dB below actual clip. So that whole article is suspect since they say "check your manual to be sure."

Re: Amps with clip indicators that fire at 3dB below actual clip?

I'm an ex Yorkville guy so I sent this thread to a friend of mine still there. Here's the response:

[FONT=&amp]Hi All,

The power amp clip lights fire exactly when the amplifier has reached clipping.This information has probably gotten confused with the clip sensing in the mixers which is indeed set up to fire 3dB below clipping.

If the limiter is turned on, the clip light also indicates the start of limiting. The clip indicating circuit in the AP amplifiers will keep the clip LED on for a longer than the actual clipping period so that the user can actually see when he has run out of headroom. The LEDs turn on even for very short periods of clipping. The clip indicators on some QSC models work off the limiter feed so clipping has to last more than 100 milliseconds before you see any clip indication. The Crowns also use a similar scheme as do all of the QSC copies out there. I'm sure this difference is what has lead to the confusion about the clip indicators.

I hope this helps clear up the confusion.

Thanks for the follow up Dave. Yorkville should probably change that info on their site so as to not confuse customers ;)

Cheers,
