Need suggestions for audio playback

Ok, this isn't a request for an MP3 player...

Here is the situation. The client does championship Dressage competition. For those who are not familiar, it is horse dancing to music - sort of. Ok?

They are looking for a device that they can install in their training and practice area which is a large indoor riding arena with a viewing area behind glass.
There is a PA in the arena and the gear to drive it is installed in the viewing area.

What they do is similar to other dance choreography where they play snippets of music to go along with horse movement slowly constructing a whole performance. So, they need to be able to use a remote through the glass to select music, play, stop, rewind etc. They also need to be able to see the information for the selection for timing while doing this. Things like iPods and such have been tried but you cannot read them through the glass and the unit really can't live in the arena as it is a very dirty environment.

Ideas?

Thanks

Re: Need suggestions for audio playback

To take Milt's suggestion one step further, either:

A)an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad running the Remote (free) app, controlling a computer with iTunes in the rack room

or

B)an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad connected to an Apple AirPort Express Base Station in the rack room

Re: Need suggestions for audio playback

here's a potential option
Welcome to Rinkmusic.com
each competitor gets an RFID keytag which calls up their playlist in the system (users could have multiple keytags too I suppose)
everything else is automatic, as well as audibly calling out the name of who is up, who is on deck, etc.

not 100% sure on your requirements re: flexible playlists so check the features carefully but it does seem pretty versatile (and maybe customizable if you ask them)

We do have WIFI G in the arena so this seems possible.
What is the remote app? I am not as Apple literate as I would like to be though I have a MacBook and iPhone.

I don't need the system to actually be used for competition. Only for developing the performance for a single competitor which will be put on a CD and played by the operations folks at a competition so this may be overkill for us.

Re: Need suggestions for audio playback

+1

simple. easy to use. pretty bullet proof. works well with an iPod touch as well. even a 1st gen one that you could get for a song on ebay...

Ok, displaying my ignorance some more... Does this only work with Macs or will it work with a PC and players other than iTunes?

I agree that this looks like it could be a great solution.

Thanks.

it appears to work with a PC, although i've never done it as i have an allergy to microsoft. i will say it's super easy with a mac and for your application you could get a super cheap older macbook or iMac and it should work well. it will NOT work with other players. it is specifically for iTunes....
