Power cable for PowerCon?

I am looking at building some new PowerCon cables for my wedges; I was supplied with ~10’ 14/3 SJ cables. I am planning on buying a small spool and building at least: 2x 25’ Edison to PowerCon, 1x 50’ Edison to PowerCon & 3x 15’ PowerCon to PowerCon to start out with.

What size cable? 12, 14…
What rated cable? SJ, SO…

Re: Power cable for PowerCon?

As far as I know, code says if the cord is under 6 meters and is a direct supply cable of a piece of equipment it can be SJ. Since Powercon is always directly feeding some piece of gear (it can't be used as an extension), I think you'll be fine with SJ for the shorter pieces. As far as the size, think of what your total load is...according to the NEC, 14/3 cord is rated at 18amps, so I'd likely use that.

Simplifying:
If it is on the ground or in accessible areas SO, always. In the air can be a bit different, squints often use SJ rated cabling, including a lot of Soca.

12/3 is rated for the full amperage of the 20a powercon, not so the 14. Spend the extra few $$$ on the 12, and any question as to suitability is already answered.

Note that 12/3 SO is a tight fit in a 20a powercon, I have had the best luck with Carol cabling, which we purchase in bulk from Delco.

Carol is absolutely the best cord out there. Super durable and flexible. All my Powercon is 12/3 SOOW just in case anyone was wondering :D~:-D~
