i've got a drummer who plays with headphones. he won't use in-ears, and i've been using the venerable 7506s for him for a while. problem is that the isolation is lousy, so he turns them up to death volume and then uses earplugs. again, no biggee. except we're now blowing them up on a regular basis. bummer.

so. any good ideas for cans about the same price as these that might have a bit better isolation, and/or ability to handle volume abuse?

Sennheiser HD280 Pro is also worth a look or perhaps for more $$ the HD380 Pro. There was a big headphone comparison test by Dave Rat a couple years ago that tested a bunch of options and had quite a bit of good info. I use HD280 Pro for general mixing purposes and they isolate pretty well when looking to pfl a certain instrument while the whole band is playing and the PA is on. Our drummer has used them occasionally and been quite happy with them.

I like the HD280 Pro in general, but I found them lacking in the bass department when used for drum monitoring. I have used them several times while drumming and found there wasn't enough bottom end for my taste. YMMV

Can't comment on the Sony's or the Ultraphones.
