Carvin has a line array?

re: Carvin has a line array?

Wonder if TCS has anything to do with it? Carvin has a new 21" sub too that can be used as a ground stack with these tops.

I looked at the 21 inch sub. Its 23.5 X 23.5 X 23.5 and is 80lbs.
Claims a 10 db down point of 20hz with a 3db down point of 30hz.
1000/2000/4000peak. 4 0hms
97db 1w1m 133peak. 80lbs.
$479 hmmm. Seems like alot to ask for such a small box and at that price what does the driver alone cost?

Seems to be a reworking of the concept of their 2x10 trap box. Not expecting much at $699. I'm sure they will sell a bunch, and they will make noise. I would bet that the Behringer one will actually be better, not that I'd want to touch either....

With flybar and fly hardware addons, you're looking at under 12K for a 6 box per side hang or under 20K for 10 per side, not including processing and power of course. That's still dirt cheap, you might be able to buy a used Versarray rig of that size for that price if you were lucky. I believe I remember seeing the behringer being targeted around $1500/box, I am surprised as I figured Behringer would win the race to the bottom. Not saying it would sound good, but that would make for a pretty good sized rig.... and with no Carvin logo on the front I wonder how many punters would actually know the difference.....

Not advocating these, but I don't doubt they will sell.

Maybe they'd sell unloaded boxes and let me insert my own choice of drivers, triamped with a lake for DSP and making some flat phase presets, that might be interesting, LOL.

We won't really know until it comes out, but in my experience, Carvin consistently uses the cheapest possible components and the minimal passive crossovers required to get the job done. $10k for 12 boxes is going to get you what? An MI grade line array that will probably have all the horsepower of a pair of KF650's? Why even bother?

I doubt "the punters" would recognize any logo except JBL or Bose. They aren't the ones making the decision on equipment anyway.

I don't disagree, it is impossible for these to be up to the standard that most of us here would consider suitable at that price point. Your comparison to KF650's is probably a bit exaggerated ( 12 boxes vs 2 KF650s is 24 10" and 24 1" vs 2 15", 2 10", 2 2" - even if the drivers suck it has the potential to be loud).

My point is that this is affordable to ankle biters, DJ's, etc, and there are plenty of places that they could bid their cheapo line array on and the promoters wouldn't know the difference - it looks like a big rig..... oooh.... ahhhhh..... for non-rider type events most promoters (at least the ones I know) wouldn't know the difference if I showed up with this or with a Q rig. No joke.....

There are lots of churches, regional festivals, fairs, corporate events, etc where the folks making the decision have minimal knowledge beyond that of the audience. Someone could easily exploit this and undercut regional providers or at least drag everybody's prices down even further.
I predict more ankle biter competition headaches for regional sound companies as more of these cheap line arrays get out into the wild.

Somewhat related to this, I have seen a few folks tout their 'line array' around here only to wind up doing shows with 1-2 line array tops over a single 2x18 on its long end. While it may sound good, it is hardly a line array. Seen a few VRX setups done this way.

Re: Carvin has a line array?

My concerns would be with the fly hardware and how safe it is. Is it gonna come crashing down if it gets blown around a little by a strong puff of wind? Electrical equipment gets certified with UL or ?? so what does line array hanging hardware have to pass - anything?

The hardware was designed by a very skilled engineer! You guys are so funny passing judgement on a product that isn't even shipping yet just because you don't like the manufacturer.

I won't pass any judgement on the product until I see and hear it. When things are inexpensive it does make me wonder about how well they are made and regardless of how they sound or how loud they get these things are supposed to be flown so I worry about the fly hardware. So the question stands - are things like fly hardware inspected and certified in some way? Does anyone know the answer to this?

I'm not passing judgment, but I'm VERY skeptical that Carvin can amortize the cost of developing, testing and insuring the flying components of this system with the retail prices quoted in this thread.

Not at liberty to divulge the actual numbers but I was shocked at how much those costs add to JBL's VerTec products.

Perhaps they're getting into an insurance pool with Uli?

My concern is not the design of the equipment-but rather who the typical user is! Typically- the person who buys that level of gear is not what you would call " a professional".

Would the typical Carvin user buy (and erect properly) trussing/lifts etc to support the load under various conditions? THAT is the real question. Same thing for Behringer.

For the person who is looking for cheap speakers-what is to say they won't be buying a cheap fly systems as well? And we have all seen what happens when you use REAL fly systems/trussing etc and have experience people setting it up. It can STILL come down. Now let's let the "part timers" do it-who got the gig because they were "cheap". So you see where I am going with this?--------------------------------------------------

Just look at Peavey. Their gear gets blamed all the time-but in most cases it is the USER who is at fault for the bad sound-but the gear gets blamed.

It is one thing to have bad sound-and QUITE another to have bad flying-where people can get killed.
