No, this isn't a rant about the education system or illiteracy rates....

I'm just astounded that every time I visit here it seems like at the bottom of the screen it says:

Welcome to our newest member: coolio34travis9barkerRULZ999

There is nowhere in the super-easy registration process where you are asked for an alias, and the only place where you can enter your user name is a field conveniently called "Real Name", with a comment clearly describing how it must be your real name. What's the confusion here? Are people really out to lunch, or is it as I suspect, that everyone has their tin foil hat on and is afraid to put their real name out on the scary 'ol net? :?~:-?~:???:

Also notable, there are 3X as many members here as there are page views on the "Required Reading" section Real Name Policy thread.

Beauty.

Re: MOAN: Why do so many people not know how to read?

Jeff,

I also find it incredible. Not only that, but after you register, until you've made a few posts there is a large yellow banner at the top also explaining the real name policy.

Fortunately most of the folks who register with an obviously not real name don't post without changing it, which is fine by me!

Re: MOAN: Why do so many people not know how to read?

Probably all the same people in Mexico and France that bid on my EBay auctions even though I say "USA only sales, no international shipping!!!"

In some parts of the world we have learned to largely ignore this as it is often written that way to be PC, even if it what the seller really mens "USA sales, and any other country that I'm likely to trust the citizens of". Sad but true.

Re: MOAN: Why do so many people not know how to read?

At the risk of stating the obvious, english may not be the first language of many people from around the world, participating here (including some closer to home).

I continue to be impressed by how well so many of our friends from around the world communicate with us in our mother tongue, because we would be incapable of speaking theirs.

Neida, det er slett ikke vanskelig!
Nein, das ist gar nicht schwer!
Non, c'est pas dificil!

If there is one language here on earth that everybody needs to master to a reasonable degree, it is english/american. Everybody around the globe uses the same internet, watches CNN, and get fed american and british culture and language in more than 80% of entertainment. We have got every reason to learn to master the language, your only reason to want to speak Swedish is a desire to understand the swedish chef and chat up some blonde girls :)~:)~

Re: MOAN: Why do so many people not know how to read?

I've been to Norway. The country and the women were beautiful. How are things in Bergen?. Hemsidal?

The women are only beautiful for the tourists, once the season is over they turn back into trolls
Bergen (German word for Mountains) probaly raining as usual, and Hemsedal is probably quite slow, being a winter resort.

Well thanks to one Mr. Jose Montes, I'm now having to take time out of my day to research shipping rates to Colombia instead of just printing a domestic label off of paypal. I don't care what nationality you are, as long as your money clears and I can ship the damn thing somewhere in the states.

True. After all they teach English from elementary school and up here. I don't see that teaching Norwegian at every american school will be the reality anytime soon

I wouldn't mind us learning one other language. But which one?

Friend of mine was fluent in 6 languages by 6th grade. Oy.
