Higgs boson confirmed

Re: Higgs boson confirmed

Probably a pleasant diversion from the daily drumbeat of EURO zone sovereign debt woes. The daily news cycle here is dominated by upcoming elections, for better and worse, mostly worse.

My major disappointment with 24/7 cable news is that they don't present more news, just the same small handful of news stories over and over and over... Kind of amusing how they mishandled the breaking news about recent supreme court decisions, so faster is not really better...

They'll report the Higgs Boson more widely when somebody figures a way to link it to black holes and the end of the world, or global warming, or some other way that scares people..... ;-(

Re: Higgs boson confirmed

Or at least a particle with the same predicted properties with 5 sigma certainty by two independent research groups.

As always in science, peer review pending.

I sometimes work audio at DESY, the german accelerator project and these conferences I usually understand nothing at. Great work I would say.

Re: Higgs boson confirmed

Higgs Boson goes into a Catholic church. The priest says, "You're not welcome here." Higgs Boson replies, "You can't have mass without me."

Re: Higgs boson confirmed

Norway, too.
Yeah, scientists on breakfast tv crying with joy

Just don't get it, they think they might have seen evidence of energy traces of a particle that has an energy that is consistent with what could be the energy level of a theoretical particle. And this particle has got an energy 125 times higher than the mass-energy of a proton????????
No wonder my PA doesn't sound good sometimes.

Re: Higgs boson confirmed

They were talking about the Higgs-Boson on NPR today. The guy from Cal-Tech that they had on said that had the .gov not cancelled the Super Conducting Super Collider in Texas, that we (as in United States of Americans) would have found the Higgs-Boson at least five years ago. Way to stay at the top of the scientific discovery game America!

And had the people at CERN worked with those Texans we (as in human beings of earthlings) might have found it 10 years ago - and saved a bunch of money!

[joke]

A Higgs boson, a charmed quark, and a common electron go into a bar... Nobody notices. (they're very small).

PS: What do you do with a used super-collider? I'm sure there's always a higher energy particle to pursue, unless we accidentally tear the fabric of the universe. Probably not close to that yet. Maybe we could recycle some neodymium from the elctro-magnets to make new speakers.
