Length color code

Re: Length color code

On a 25 ft cable, 20% is enough to push it to the next size. Is a 30 ft cable a 30 ft or a 25 ft +- 20%?

(really geeking out with the math jokes)

Re: Length color code

I've converted to using slip-on color rings to denote cable length:

I previously used colored electrician's tape for color coding length, but the electrician's tape was a maintenance point. Of course, the colored rings cannot be used in combinations of colors like the colored electrician's tape, so I've adopted a color code scheme where I use the more subdued colors for those lengths that are likely to be the most visible on stage. I rely heavily on drop snakes, so I tend to use a lot of 15ft. (black ringed) and 25ft. (brown ringed) mic lines. 40ft. (blue ringed) mic lines is my next most common length. My remaining mic/patch lines are 10ft. (violet ringed) and 100ft. (grey ringed). I have my color code chart printed (in big letters) and posted on the underside of the lids of the mic cable cases.

Another length management system I've seen is to dispense with color coding length... instead, the mic cables are in multiples of... oh... approx. 12 1/2ft. as I recall: 12 1/2ft., 25ft., 50ft., 100ft., where-in it's fairly easy to distinguish the 4 different lengths of cables based solely on the relative differences in the bulk of the coils.

Re: Length color code

Because I'm cheap and still build my cables, I build them with heat shrink on the connectors for extra rigidity. I only have three sizes-

10'- Red
15'- White
25'- Clear

With the magic of sub snakes I don't need any thing longer.
