Yamaha O1V96 fader is messed up.

I had a gig about 4 or 5 weeks ago in the extreme heat and humidity that we have experienced in the Midwest in July and really most of the summer. Someone on the festival committee clearly had their head up their butt and decided that the tent should be placed so that 1/2 of the tent covers a softball diamonds infield...guess which part of the tent they put the stage? I was just beside myself about getting all this sand kicked up in my gear.

Although i took every precaution available, things just got pretty f'ing filthy. I open up my amps and blew them out after the gig as well as clean off the surface of my FOH and monitor consoles, the latter of which is the O1V96. Now the #1 fader is messed up. It will not respond to the upward movement. You can pull the fader up, go to another layer, and the fader will snap down, just won't snap back up.

I did get the thing to move albeit sluggishly for a while by working the fader and a layer button and almost got it working, but it does not last long. I think the poor guy is just all gunked up and there is too much resistance. Does anyone know of a way/method to clean one of these out? Can you even clean them or are they sealed? I want to get this taken care of after the festival season. For now, I'm getting by bumping things down a channel.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Dust is the kryptonite of Yamaha faders. Don't use any kind of liquid fader lubricants or cleaners in the faders, it will just turn the dirt to mud. If you are lucky, a combination of compressed air and a vacuum cleaner may get the dust out. You're probably going to have to replace the fader, the good news is the faders are available for about $20 on eBay. There are several good tutorials on replacing Yamaha faders if you search around.
