A&H GL2200 repair; right channel drops volume.

I have a GL2200 and the right channel (main out) will randomly drop in volume. If I wiggle the XLR connector, the volume will come back up for a couple seconds.

Any ideals? I have hit the solder joints with heat. The XLR cable into the board is a randomly pulled one from the case.

Did you check the solder connections on the faders?

Re: A&H GL2200 repair; right channel drops volume.

Take the cover off, power up the board, and use a rubber pencil eraser to poke around and localize the failure. It could be a cold solder joint, or a work-hardened solder joint. It also may not be right at the jack, but something that gets flexed a little when you wiggle the board the connector is mounted to.

I had a similar issue on my MixWizard. I was very surprised to find the problem was on a channel card, but was affecting the master outputs.

Re: A&H GL2200 repair; right channel drops volume.

Check and see if the fader connections use crimp pins on the wire connections. For some reason on a particular batch, A&H used crimp on pins on the wires to the faders, and then would solder the pin tip to the fader lugs. The crimps oxidize over time and loose connection. Depending on which ones, you'll either lose audio on those channels or it could go full gain if the ground lets go. In any case, you can either cut off the pins and solder the wires direct to the lugs or just flow a good amount of solder into the crimp. I had at least 8 channels start crapping out due to this. Initially I thought it was the ribbon cable and replaced that. But the issue persisted. An email to the tech at AM&S shed some light on the issue and those problems are gone now.

I have had the same thing happen on a very old one I have. Actually I think out of the GL boards I have this is happening on a GL2000. My solution is just to use the subgroups as main outs. I know, not much of a solution but I don't really bother mixing with subgroups on that board anyhow. :0

A while back someone did post a solution that may address your problem: there are small pin connectors that connect each channel strip laterally at 90 degrees to each XLR strip on the back. If I remember correctly, this problem only occurs randomly on end-channels and I think also middle-end channels too. Basically the end-strips have more room to move and less material to secure them in place. That probably would include the Right Out too, so it is at least worth ruling out.

The problem: the lateral pin connectors sometimes get disconnected because the strip has enough room to flex from side to side. So their solution was to squeeze a small block of styrofoam into the rear to secure the rear of the problem strip from lateral motion.
