Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

Thinking of switching my sm58s out with Senny e835 mics. Opinions or suggestions in the same 100$ price range would be good. I have some Audix Om2 in my stable already so I could go that route as well.

Don't. Keep the SM-58 for the voices that will not be flattered by the 835 (women, lectern use). Add the 835s if you feel a need for another batch of budget mics, but for about $120 each I'd look at Beta57A.

In many cases, the e835 is a nicer mic than the 58. I used to carry them, but have since found the AKG d5 to be a better option. The EV PL80 is worth a look too.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

Pl80 has some pretty ridiculously low pricing from a google search. Might have to grab one of those and do a quick comparison. Remember there being a Stupid deal of the day I passed up a while back.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

It really depends on what you are trying to do. I would get one and try it for a few shows before you buy a bunch. The e835 is brighter on top than an SM58 but can sound a little thin and scooped out on some vocalists. I have both and am honestly not a big fan of either. Personally I would keep the 58's and buy a few better mics as funds permit. There are some great mics in the $200-$300 range like the Heil PR35 and the EV967 just to name a couple. The SM58's will always work and you can use them on guitar, drums, or as a hammer in a pinch. Also they will keep the wear and tear off of your good mics when needed.

And this is where sound can be so subjective, I much prefer the 835 to the SM58. I agree with Mr. Frost, doesn't hurt to have both, especially when they can be had for so little money.

E935 or AE6100 are what I look to first for relatively inexpensive but not "cheap" options. It's not like the jump from cheap mics to good ones costs $10k; we're talking a couple hundred.

About $100 CAD to go from the 835 to 935. Not a lot of money when you consider that the 935 blows them both out of the water, but we still have an extensive stock of 58 and 835 around for when you're not quite sure if you are going to get the mic back in the same condition it went out.

That is exactly why I have the SM58's and e835's. It is not that I dislike either, there are just much better choices in my mic box and I prefer no EQ except a low cut filter on my vocal mics. If you are listening to the two by themselves the e835 is much clearer and approaches the detail of a condenser. In an actual mix situation the SM58 is more forward sounding and will often cut through the mix a little better. Yes you could always use some EQ but that tends to "smear" the image because of the phase wackiness that happens. If you start messing with EQ on the midrange and above that "focused" sound will rapidly come apart. Not "as big" of a deal on most instruments blending into a mix but major on the money channel. On an analog console it is huge.

Also the e935 is another one of those excellent mics in the $200-$300 range. I have not used the AE6100 but I will bet it will be a similar improvement. In my opinion upgading the vocal mics by $125 each or so is the single biggest bang for the buck improvement you can make. As you go up the ladder you get other improvements as well, like better off axis performance and sometimes better signal to noise ratio. I would rather add one $300 mic for the money channel than make a somewhat lateral move and buy three $100 mics. By all means keep the SM58's or something similar for those that will abuse them as some of us have mentioned.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

I have a bunch of EV mics.. PL 80a's and PL 84's and find them super useful in many situations. And they cost squat compared to what we are discussing. 80's can be found for $50 and I bought 84's for $27 each. Both better than a 58 in most cases and without the Senn 'fizzy' top end.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

About a dozen years ago we started replaced our 8 x SM-58 with Audix OM-2/3/5. We continued buying Audix to replace dead or lost units. Then this year we switched to E-835 mics and have just a couple of surviving Audix. We are very happy with E-835. For a couple of lady's with rounder sounding voices I have found the E-835 not great. I tried the E-840 and bought 2 of those for just a bit more money than E-835. I am happy with mix of E-835 and E840 - good on a budget.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

To me, it sounds like the e835 has a thickness in the mid-range that the Beta 57 and Beta 58 don't have and there is a clarity there that the SM58 doesn't have. I think I like the Sennheiser better than the Beta 57 and 58, but I have yet to use it with a band. I've only listened to it using headphones.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

Been using 835's for around 3 years and they work and sound great for me given the sale price I paid for a 3 pack deal.

Re: Sennheiser e835 opinions suggestions.

I've been grabbing up e935's over the past couple years off of eBay anywhere from $90-125 in like new condition. I have found it to be a good general purpose mic where there are not too many voices that just sound plain bad with it, and on most voices it sounds good to great.

I tried out the PL80a a year or two ago and I thought it sounded pretty good, especially considering you can pick them up for $50 a piece. I seem to remember liking the sound of the e935 a little better, but I think the PL80a has decently better feedback rejection.

To answer your question, I think swapping out to 835's would be a bit of a side move. I'd start watching for some PL80 or e935.

Take Care,
Phil

This, The new EV PL80 mic can be had for $50 bucks a piece with some looking. They are my go to mic. Often at larger shows ill bust one out and compare to 58s, B58s and many sennheiser mics. An often Ill have an engineer or band buying one off me at the end of the night. Excellent mics.
