iPad based lighting rig

Re: iPad based lighting rig

Thank you for the kind words.
We know we're not big league but we're really happy with the results of the iPad and computer control.

One more question Jeff - what are you using the 2TB Time Capsule for?

It's the router for the sound (5 GHz) & lights (2.4 GHz), and backup device.

Do you know if the ShowXpress software has an app for iPhone?

I run the light show from my drums via iPad (iPhone app) networked to the light laptop. In addition to buttons for each song there are buttons for blackout and scenes between sets/songs. Admittedly there's an "OH CRAP" button with a generic light show that kills the back track/click track in case we get off.

If so could the Dell laptop create an adhoc network an let the iPhone run it remotely the way the MacbookPro/iPad/StudioLive works?

I haven't tried, I use the same network for sound & lights, just connect on different bands.

Re: iPad based lighting rig

All my lights are here. Busy doing sound gigs last night and today. I'll see about setting up the rig in my basement and giving it a go!!

Fixtures:

8 - Blizzard 3NX
6 - Chauvet Pinspot LED 360
4 - Chauvet Intimidator 1.0
DMXIS

Lookin forward to getting down to business!

I used four 3NX's to light up a comedian last night. Here's a short video after, with the lights just changing color. Nice and bright!!

Re: iPad based lighting rig

I've had some time to work with DMXIS, I really like the program. Maybe not advanced enough for true Lampies but for a sound guy upgrading his ancient light setup, it's exactly what I'm looking for, in terms of ease of use!

Re: iPad based lighting rig

Figured out iPad control for DMXIS with some help.

iPad interface: 4 banks of 25 scenes broken down into groups. Also, main Dimmer control for all fixtures and little details like 3NX Strobe, 3NX color chase, smoke machine control and global blackout. TouchOSC has a totally user defineable interface, so here is what I came up with.

Second page, global control over 3NX (rear) and Fab5 (band) fixtures! And more...

And iPhone control as well. 4 pages, access to 25 scenes and more, one group for each page

Verse
Chorus
Solo
End
Master Faders
3NX global control
Fab5 global control

Re: iPad based lighting rig

Below is a video from last month where our bass player set up a camera on his side of the stage to evaluate his performance. It gives an OK perspective of the light show.

I've done all of the light/video/back tracks but I am not nor have I ever have been a lampie, I'm just a drummer/sound guy trying to make his way in the lighting world. So constructive criticism is encouraged

About the lights- My thought on this song was to create a dark, post apocalyptic feel. Starts off dark and foggy and uses the lasers as the primary light, staying mostly dark and shadowy until the 2:48 mark when some side effect lights kick in. From 3:40 to 4:00 the guitar solo is highlighted with a little movement from the back lights. Then at 4:00 we go bright to finish out the song.

About the sound- This is a video camera recording in the smallest bar we play, not much drum out of the mains and the compression from the camera mic is awful. Sounds kinda like a BigE demo.
