Hi

I am looking to expand my knowledge of lighting systems and want your advice on putting together a simple but expandable system for a 5 piece band.

Basically what is a good starting point for decent controller, wash and some color accents. Moving lights and other effects to be added later.

What is a realistic starting budget including power, rigging, etc?

Thanks
Jared

Go LED. For a bar band it gives you all the colors you want with no gels and it will work even when power is iffy.

cheaplights.com has actually been alright in my experience for the type of thing you are looking to do. Check out their LED par 64 cans.

do you have a rough budget in mind?

Not really. Since I dont have much experience with lighting I am not sure what a realistic budget might be. I apologize for being so vague. I just don't know enough to give a reasonable number. What is a good target budget for a decent lighting rig?

I'll second the Chauvet 4Bar systems. Put one on each side of the stage, and you've got your typical bar band setup.

These can give you that flashy color lighting that you're used to seeing with par cans, but since each light can be any color, the effect is far greater.

The problem is that it doesn't really light the band, it just splashes color on them. But for bar bands, that's what's expected, I guess. To really light the stage is going to take a quite a bit more work, usually.
