Re: Must read review of $14,000 speaker cables

Do you want this guy to build your power cable:
Oddiophile Ep 10 BUILD YOUR OWN POWER 3 pt 1 - YouTube

I just wonder when some idiot starts to make his power cable out of catt6. There are all kinds of DIY that think catt 5 or 6 makes a great speaker cable. So why not power?

Oh besides little things like voltage-resistance-current. Never mind those thing if you "think" you can hear a difference.

I'm hooked!

I usually read Dilbert for my amusement but this stuff is hilarius...

I found this online ups (without the battery so it's only a ps). It regenerates mains voltage ac-->dc-->ac. So far, so good...

Now they say
To handle the challenge, inside each Power Plant is a massive power amplifier that delivers the new and distortion free AC to your equipment.
Sounds like a resonable product to filter crap from the ac-mains.

But then they say
One of the major advantages of generating new power from old is the ability to also generate new waveforms that enhance the capabilities of the power feeding your equipment.

MultiWave extends the peak charging time of the sine wave so connected equipment has more energy storage and less power supply ripple. Turning MultiWave on is like adding a larger capacitor bank to your connected equipment’s power supply. The audible results are dramatic and produce a bigger soundstage that sounds far more natural than with a simple sine wave.
Ok, so they take the perfect sine wave they've generated and then flattens the top to lower the crest factor and intentionally introduces harmonic noise into the ac-path :-0

If clipping a sine wave isn't distortion then I don't know what is... OMG!

I have to confess that I use cat5 when I rewire the cavity for my guitars pickups.

I open up the cat5 and then pull out the TP's (single core). One TP to each pickup. It works really great!

OMG, I've become an audiophile ;-)

I'm using CAT5 as speaker wire right now... on my Home Audio Playback Device. Two pairs were used for each 'conductor'. It's roughly 18g with is fine for the 7' run... and I had it on hand at 2am :)

Classic marketing puffery turning a lemon into lemonade. Cheap inverters have square wave, or stepped square wave outputs.

PS: I once wrote an ad for an old class AB "heavy iron" power amp. Instead of trying to ignore the size and weight, I listed the "massive" transformer and heat sinks as features. :)

Re: Must read review of $14,000 speaker cables

It's not just the audiophool guys who get into this nonsense, I had a touring BE the other day (I was system engineer for the provider) who blamed everything that he didn't like about the gig, venue, system, microphone quality etc. on the lack of an external word-clock for the M7. The issues he had with his mix were ALL related to his non-existent understanding of basic gain-structure... but he swore up and down that his Black Lion word clock (that he conveniently was NOT carrying that day) would have solved all of our "system" short-comings.

After he accidentally double assigned the right side of the main bus to all of the matrices for the second time within 10 minutes... I gave up trying to have any meaningful communication with him. THe scary part was that he claimed he had a (house) day job running an M7 full-time.

He may have a job running it full time-but that STILL does not mean he knows what is going on.

My biggest gripe with BE's is that they always blame the gear/provided system-it is NEVER THEIR fault! Don't argue about the quality of the mic pres in the console provided when you can't turn on the mics at the proper time or you can't hear any vocal-forget the SOUND of the vocal-there is nothing to hear.

Yeah I am sure the mic pres will automatically make the vocals louder or get rid of that "boomy midbass"--------------------------------

Sorry.

I've done a show with him. He's the guy that had me patch his clock and went on and on about how much better things sounded... until I pointed out he'd yet to change the clock source on the desk.

Re: Must read review of $14,000 speaker cables

+1 ... I've found that with the B-level touring acts, one out of four of them will be knowledgable, humble and really cool to work with. The other three will typically range from clueless (but friendly and humble) all the way to the raging ass-hats who believe they know everything and blame the gear, venue, catering, parking and anything else they can think of for all of their problems. I don't work for any providers who bring out anything other then the specified/accepted rider friendly gear, which makes the guys who blame the gear even more difficult to deal with.

The amount of non-sense and myth-based bullshit some of these guys spew out is just amazing though... blows my mind to figure out how some of these cats keep their gigs with the (crap) work they produce and the attitudes they often have.

Sorry to push the topic swerve out even further... back to the audio-foolishness.

Unfortunately for every BE that is like that there is a venue/ house tech with a system that had speakers pointed no where near the audience, no crossovers between bands, graphics hacked to hell, multiple pieces of nonworking equipment, and expected the BE to "mix" by touching nothing other than some of the faders.

Let's just say the state of PA in the small clubs, bars, listening rooms, PACs, coffee houses, etc. is not pretty.

To jump threads, I have a lot of respect for a simple PV XR head and SP2's. Thinking of some of the other rigs and equipment I have seen in use, it is no wonder.

BANG!!!!!!

Here lies the messenger. RIP

Re: Must read review of $14,000 speaker cables

I wondered if there was an after market for this type of product of programmed maintenance schedule. An unscrupulous, but enterprising, bench tech could inform a few of the cable purchasers about solder migration, and especially asymmetric solder migration, and suggest a re-termination at 6 month intervals. Silver solder of course. NASA approved aeronautical flux. That would fix that unstable sound stage in a jiffy.

Re: Must read review of $14,000 speaker cables

Yeah, and we rag on audiophools. There is so much wrong with our industry.

It is not isolated to just our industry.

It is modern culture and a poorly educated/informed population.

Business and politics plays on this ignorance for respective gain (treasure and power, and treasure).

Life is an IQ test that many people routinely fail.

And no wonder they choose to stay at home and listen to music. Since the "professional" music sounds so bad-no wonder they think they have better hearing than us.

At least not all the sound systems are bad. But of course even with a properly designed-aligned system-a "typical" operator will make it sound much worse than it actually does :(
