Your smallest subwoofer. You probably have several and they probably stay busy. When you aren't happy with it, what is the most common reason. Poll is below!

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Well my smallest sub is the SRX718, which I guess isn't super small. But I haven't had any real complaints with it yet after 4 years, which I guess is great for me and not for your poll. I guess I'll put in a vote for output since who wouldn't want more headroom, even beyond what physics would allow!

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Yeah, if your smallest subwoofer could be louder then maybe it would become your biggest subwoofer as well.

Years ago I used to think that it was the bass that was the hardest to do. In more recent years I've come to the conclusion that it's not. The "top box" really does hold a lot of challenges. But this digresses from the point of the poll. Lets party and may the bass be adequate for all!

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

My only problem is that the small sub I want (Danley TH Mini) is so small my QRX212 tops would look silly on top of them, be too low to use, and they don't pole mount. So is the problem my little sub I want or my tops? ;-)

I have a couple EV Sb122s. They're more of a low mid box than a subwoofer, but they add some thump to the Zx1s I have for small coffeehouse type jobs.

I can carry one in each hand - they use the same cabinet as the Sx300 and are only weigh 30lbs or so.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Appearance

I rarely use my small subs (JTR Growlers) because people hear with their eyes.
They think I'm cheaping out on them by bringing a too small of a rig
(even though the rig will get loud enough to get them fired)

If I used the Danley TH Mini's, there would be a 2nd problem.
You can't pole mount a speaker on top of them
As cool as they are (and they are cool!), the Tripod I'd have to use for the tops would take up more room than My Growlers do.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Besides not having a pole cup, the TH-Mini's single handle on top is awkward for it's weight IMO. I'm tempted to remove the handle and try to fabricate a pole cup plate to take its place. I'd then mount a pair of spring loaded handles in the sides I guess?

I do have even smaller - a pair of Peavey PRSUB that do fine for hearing-friendly-SPL gigs with 500w into each. I can carry two at a time.

I also have a pair of GK bass cabs, 4 ohm MBE212's that weigh 34 lbs each. Those I intend to install pole cups on - they thump pretty good with 800w into each and only give up maybe 3db over the TH-Mini's. Much easier to carry around :).

My mains are usually a pair of RCF 310A's - and Steve is right about folks hearing with their ears :( . C'est la vie :) .

Yep, TH Mini, one handle = 70 lbs of awkward. I voted "ergonomics".

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

My "smallest" subwoofer is also my largest subwoofer currently.

Ditto. But my smallest/only sub is currently Danley TH118's. I currently have one tucked under a skirted banquet table for a wedding reception tomorrow afternoon. I'm pretty sure I'll get a few questions on how the Fulcrum FA12's are making so much bass! :)

Agreed, especially if we're talking about 1 or 2 subs per side. It's pretty hard to screw up to the point of compromising a gig; it's easier to screw up top box coverage.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

My "smallest" subwoofer is also my largest subwoofer currently. My only complaint is that a single box doesn't always have enough get up and go, but that can be solved by simply adding more boxes. :)
Evan

Kinda the same boat, my smallest sub is my largest. SRX 728s, I guess I have no real complains but I would love to have some smaller subs for smaller gigs and drum fills.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

I have two different pair of small subs, a pair of Contrabass subs, and a pair of vented neo 15" I just built a few months ago. The Contras are still pretty impressive for a small sub, they move an incredible amount of air for their size. The low extension down to 16hz costs efficiency(they are just shy of 1% ), so the 15" neo vented cabinets handle gigs where decent efficiency and cut off around 37hz is fine.

Best regards,

John

+1  My biggest complaint is that they have been discontinued :(~:-(~ (and I have never seen any on the secondhand market here)

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Are you guys really putting speakers on subs with pole cups? I call that a "Bingo" setup because I can't imagine the top ever being high enough for anything but little old ladies on folding chairs. And even then, I would rather have a speaker up high where it can cover the room more evenly. [Sometimes I call it a "Banjo" setup as well because it looks great in Banjo Center.] Man up and get some TS99s at full tilt boogie. ;)

Would you add a large plate to the bottom of the mini as well for better stability? Even at 73lbs it's just too small of a footprint for a speaker on top, I think.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

I use tops on poles on my subs for small shows.
Works fine and definitely gets them high enough
I usually point them down a bit w/balance tilters.

The balance tilter looks like a very nice piece of hardware.
How high (from the floor) would you estimate the horns are with that setup?

btw, I haven't seen any posts from Nimrod in quite a while. I hope he's doing well.

Re: Poll: Your Smallest Subwoofer

Horns are a little above 7' off the ground there.
The Balance Tilters were expensive, but are solid and work extremely well.
