Hey, I got a e mail from a artist that i am doing sound for in this festival in a couple of weeks. and I have no idea what he is talking about, I get the two stereo outs but the rest sounds like greek to me , can anyone help with this , and clear my mind from the clouds that i seem to have hanging there in it. here is the e mail.

"Two quarter inch outs stereo mix on a 4x2 size table at -10 dB - I can forward my stage plot to an email if you'd like a print out"

That is his reply back from me advancing him. can anyone tell me what i need. besides a new brain?

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

Could it be a DJ? He needs a table 4ft x 2 ft and the levles are -10dB (consumer grade) would be my interpretation.

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

i'd bet he shows up wanting a small stand for his prosumer mix rig
and a stereo DI...

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

ok what would i need to make this happen for him? I am really no dummy , it's just that i have never heard what he is talking about.

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

The 4x2 table may be his mixing system with two stereo sources to a stereo output, the -10dB is probably a reference to that being -10dBV level outputs which are apparently 1/4" but are also likely unbalanced.

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

(2) TS - TS cable, (2) DI box, (2) XLR - XLR cable.

Can you find out the make and model of his mixer? If it's a balanced output you'll want to use TRS cables (or take the TS cable out one click if it's combat audio)

Chris

ok i have that for sure and have done that before.

so is he saying that his table will be running line levels @ -10 DBV's. oer is that some kind of pad or something that i will have to get and use on him?

No. He is saying you need to get him a 2'x4' table for him to put his gear on, and that the output of his gear will be two 1/4" connections at -10dBv type levels. You should be prepared with a couple of DIs in case that 1/4" is unbalanced, and a couple of TRS plug to XLRM adapters in case it is balanced.

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

often in cases like this
someone has bore witness to a couple of audio techs
discussing levels or gear

or he may have acteally read the spec for his mixer

they decide to inject some jargon they have gleaned
from eavesdropping on folks who actually have some grip on what they are discussing
into their advance for reasons unknown

i'm not saying that's what you are going to find

but i'd stop sweating it and make sure you have a couple of
quarter/quarter jumpers 'cause he cant manage to bring his own cables...

if you need pads they are on most consoles
and DI's that aint dirt cheap...

fwiw

Ok in that case then, I have all that was mentioned above then . so no worries , i should be fine. just didnt know all about what he was talking about. when you get into all that technical talk like he was , it really confuses me , for all he would have to say is i need 2 DI's , 2 TRS or TS cables and 2 XLR cables. when it gets past that , i am lost. lol dont mean to sound like a dummy , I'm not one, but it was like a big slap in the face from someone when you dont know what they slapped you for in the first place. lol

Re: What in the world is he talking about?

He's telling you his mixer is operating at what is nominally a "consumer audio" level, much like the components of a home stereo system (if you remember those). The other typical level is "+4" and is typically considered a professional device level that may, in fact, be much hotter. Some DJ CD players and mixers are capable of outputs up to +18. The higher the level and greater the LF content of the program material, the larger a passive DI's transformer must be for undistorted sound. Those DIs are expensive.

He's telling you, very indirectly, that common passive DIs will probably be acceptable and that his mixer has 2 1/4" outputs. He's saying he needs a 2'x4' table for his stuff (and that table probably isn't your problem, but ask your client if they have it for Mr. DJ). It would be nice if you ran an extension cord and power strip to his table, along with the DI lines. Be prepared to supply the 1/4" patch cables, too.

ok, thanks so much for that . I feel like i got all of that covered now. I am going to get with my client and tell him all that they are needing , i dont figure the table will be a problem at all. I can get him power and DI's to his table. I just didnt know what he was trying to say, So thank you for clearing that up.:D~:-D~:D~:-D~:D~:-D~
