Best pick current generation of EV speakers?

I heard and trialed and very much enjoyed the sound of a pair of powered EV ZLXs in a long narrow room that fits 230 people. Was inclined to buy a pair of my own, only preferably passive (already have an amp lying around) when I noticed their rms is a mere 200watts (I know I know the numbers mean little, they're all I have to go on until I actually get my hands on something though - for reference, JBL PRXs in this room never get pushed to their maximum - probably because they hurt too much, and Mackie Thumps didn't even come close to being loud enough, neither the SX300s although Peavey SP 2Gs are enough rig).

I don't want to be stuck without enough rig for the gig, but I'd really like to get something in this room that sounds as nice as those ZLXs did.

Anyone here use much EV? Do they sound as clear and pretty (as the zlxs) across the range?

(Room is mostly used for EDM although we get the Very occasional band).

Re: Best pick current generation of EV speakers?

Almost of my tops are EV and IMO the tops always sound pretty great. I havent used ZLXs but I used to have a pair of SX300s, Now I have QRX 115s and QRX 153s. Not many other tops in my price range sound as good as these. Actually many above this price range dont sound as good.

Your saying the ZLXs did cover the gig while the SX300s didnt? Thats strange to me, I beat the hell out of the 300s that I had and they always sounded great. (Not to curve this thread I saw your other thread on the 300s.)

I use the ZXA5's a lot and they always impress me.

Re: Best pick current generation of EV speakers?

Yup, the ZXA5 is a good box for the money. They are also pretty pricey. The cheapest I can find them is $1425. Most online stores have them priced at >$1600. I suspect they're out of Lisa's budget. But they would probably handle any gig she would need them for as they get hella loud and sound good until they're pushed hard.

Re: Best pick current generation of EV speakers?

In PRX territory, I'd say ELX. They are not quite as loud as PRX and I would be hesitant to use them if you need to go all out, but when you compare a ELX112 to a JRX 112 the ELX sounds like it costs a lot more, and comparing ELX112P to PRX512 the ELX sound a lot more refined and smooth. If I were shopping today, ELX would be my choice in the price range.
Next step up would be the TX2151, they are fairly awesome for the price, but amping them isn't going to be the cheapest thing you have ever done.

Cheers for the feedback :)

i confess, it was not a very thorough shoot out, and they got compared to peavey sp 2gs, not each other - just switching the speakons from one to the other mid track. of course compared to a big as wooden box, the sxs sounded quieter and tinnier. It might be my sxs, or i might not be running them right, or i might have actually hired 15" zlxs but there felt like too much disconnect between the sx and the sub

(I meant to post an update on my sx thread - omg, NARROW THROW!!!!!!!)

Re: Best pick current generation of EV speakers?

I have seen and used the ZLX 15p a couple of times now and have been impressed with the sound/cost ratio but there is a thread here or on the other forum about poor build quality. They are Chinese made, have a plastic box and are so super light even with the amp built in that my impression was if its too good to be true it usually is but I'm still gonna pick up a couple and try them out.
