Note to sound providers

Re: Note to sound providers

When doing an outdoor gig for a 400 foot throw bring enough pa. Sub clipping doesn't sound good.

Or Note to promoters: When hosting an outdoor event in a large area, be prepared to pay for enough audio production to satisfy everyone you sell a ticket to.

(The sound provider's job is to say no if the promoter is not willing to pay for proper production.)

Re: Note to sound providers

How can a BE clip the amps if your system is set right?

My point was merely that it is often more than loud enough for the audience even when the rig is so small that the BE feels the need to wring every last watt of power out of the rig to feel satisfied.

The problem I have seen MANY times is the guys who want "more and more" are the ones who can't mix anyway. No dynamic range-they think louder is the only way to get more "dynamic range" yet all they do is squash it all up by driving into compression/limiting.

Very often you can get a more dynamic sound by simply turning it down and letting the music do its thing. It will sound 'louder" and more alive.

Yes there are limits to how low it can go- but if you leave enough "room" for the big hits, then they are more impressive-instead of running it all at the same level.

It is one thing for a BE to want more-but very often they have no idea what the actual costs are or any agreement between the promoter and sound company.

Why was the show not advanced so the system was known?

It was advanced and the provider wasn't completely honest. I know it wasn't enough because at full volume almost clipping I could hear the audience singing louder than the pa. It was a jbl line stay system with 7 tops a side and 6 dubs a side. It just wasn't enough.

Re: Note to sound providers

Not enough info regarding audience geometry, but it sounds like a 4886 or 4887 rig when they needed 4888 or 4889.

It sounds like the provider promised them everything but gave them Arpege...

Re: Note to sound providers

it was a parking lot, the audience was 6 foot back from the stage and extended out 150' from center stage and went 300' back. Provider has the contract for the series of gigs at this venue and normally sub rents PA for the gig. This week they had just purchased this system and wanted to save some cash from sub renting. They told the PM that they had worked this gig before and would make sure to have the PA to do the job.

Re: Note to sound providers

I could hear the audience singing louder than the pa.

And the problem with that would be what? I'm repeatedly telling people that if the audience is singing along, keep the level down so the audience can hear themselves. When the level is right, the audience is able to sing in tune, the artist on stage get the feedback from the crowd, and everybody is happy. Maybe you just learned something and it just hasn't sunk in yet (delayed Eureka-moment) :)~:)~

Re: Note to sound providers

I'm not talking majority of the crowd I'm talking the five drunk chicks who forgot the words up front...
WOW-you could hear 5 drunk chicks who were up front singing LOUDER than the PA was-while facing away from you -while at FOH?

That really was a quiet show-------------------------------Or they were really singing REALLY loud----------------------

It is not the number of boxes-but rather what models they were-how they were "tuned" and so forth. A brand name without model numbers is pretty much useless information.

I was just a hand for the show so I got paid for the gig either way, my name was no where near public for the event either so its just me wondering how this guy keeps getting the big gigs.

He is really cheap or there is fraud happening. Those are your options. Most likely, he is the brother or cousin of the guy making the decisions.

I would say that it would be either, I don't know the details behind what went on. The provider is a good guy and the only issue for the entire night was me feeling that their should be a bit more punch.
