Picked up a pair of used XTI1000's. One of them functions perfectly. The other is being a bitch. Goes through the usual power up sequence, clicks over, turns on for a split second and then shuts off. Popped the top off and didn't see anything obvious. I'm not super familiar with these amps- anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
Evan

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

We have a shit load of those things at the shop, and 90% of them have been back to crown at least once for the exact same problem. They replaced the power supply when we sent them back. They aren't worth taking out on anything more than a bar show though. When we do, they clip just as monitor amps.

I would say that you are using too small power amps then. The XTi4000 works great on our big boy biamp racks. We use the 1000's for the horns. They also work great, for HF.

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

We don't anymore. I bring them as spares if anything. Otherwise just use them to test stuff at the shop. I Use no less than an Xti 2000 on monitors.

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

What was the repair bill? These amps are just bullshit amps for whatever, so I don't want to drop a lot of cash on them.

Evan

I have 3 XTI 4000's. 2 have been back to crown for repair, 1 twice(fortunately warranty both times). The one I had to pay for was a $213 minimum repair fee. The max fee would have been $303. This includes bench fee and return freight. Eric

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

Are they old enough to be the original made in USA versions? If not the first run of XTI amps made in China had a known problem with the power supply becoming intermittent to completely dead. An install I was working with was lucky enough to have gotten three out of four of their amps with that problem. The problem showed up over the course of about two months after being installed under a year. Crown fixed them for free but it took awhile with the back log they had in repair. I remember somewhere on the Crown website they posted the range of serial numbers effected.
Could be a big firmware glitch but since it will not stay powered up long enough theres no way to connect to System Architect to check it.

If it's an older XTi, it could be the ribbon cable from the main board to the LCD display. I have a 4k that will occasionally go into protect as soon as it turns on after a bumpy ride. Opening it up, massaging, and re-seating the ribbon cable fixes the problem.

Crown has a fix for this and the cable is slightly redesigned in later XTis, but I've never bothered to send mine in for service because it doesn't happen very often.

Repair bill was around $250 (Over
half price of a new one :frown:) if they didn't have a warranty, and I think $80 (not perfectly sure on that one) if they did. Ridiculous either way if you ask me. If you want exact prices, I can look at the bills when I get to the shop tomorrow.

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

Amp's current resale value is around $300... Not worth sending in at that price. I think I'm going to attempt to tackle this myself!

So, holding down the 3 front buttons while booting results in the fan kicking up to top speed, the front panel LED's all lighting up and the amp staying on... Front panel is useless... pushing the buttons results in the menu saying "press me" "prev" or "next." Nothing useful there. I attempted to hook it up to band manager, but it wouldn't talk to the computer. Any other ideas? My theory is that the power supply is ok. It ran just fine without kicking over in to the amp stage. When it trys to kick over to the amp stage, channel 2's ready light briefly comes on, while channel 1's does not. I think channel 1 may be causing the issues here. Tomorrow I'm going to rip into the amp and see if I can find any bad solder joints...

This is really starting to sound like the same problem I have with the ribbon cable. It looks insignificant, but it has a major effect on the function of the amp. Try reseating it a few times and see if that does the trick.

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

A friend of mine had a old early version XTI that would not connect to band manager or system architect . I called Crown and they sent me a file called "C Loader" to load into the amp that took care communication issue to allow a firmware update.
I still have the file, if you want to try it let me know and I'll email it to you.

Re: Crown XTI1000 issues

Not turning on at all (1k only, not 2k or 4k) is indicative of bad 47k 1w resistors near the power switch.
Turning on then going off at the time you would expect the "ready" light to go on is indicative of a blown channel
(usually kills the tracker FET in the 2k & 4k models as well)
Doing nothing but hot smell from surge PTC = blown IGBTs (probably drive chip and other bits as well).
Not Crown's finest hour.
