Presonus question.

Show tonight, I brought racks and stacks, band had their own SL 24.4.2, in ear setups and some powered stage monitors. I brought my own MacBook and iPad with the appropriate software installed.
Being used to an X32 I didn't; at first, wrap my head around the operating setup. First I thought.."no router, just create a network on the Mac and connect." This did work but the Mac would not keep the network connection and when this happened the board would mute and then bump back on, which was annoying to everyone. Then it dawned on me that the board was running the board, and all iPhone network connects CANNOT be done in the board and such assignments are NOT stored in the console! Add the fact that the faders don't move and I found myself inside of one confusing setup.
Is there a way to secure a constant network connection, ways of configuring the network..etc, that would help.

Re: Presonus question.

Never quite figured it out myself either. My solution is just use a full digital board. I'd much rather buy an X32 for the same price as an SL24. So much more capability. And as much as people like the pres in the Presonus, I'd prefer a Midas pre over anything. Anyway, back on topic. I have known multiple people with very unstable networking on the presonus though, and seen a couple shows turn into disasters because of it. And for some reason they still swear by them. I say have an engineer back at the console to run it, or let the band deal with it themselves if they brought the console.

what was providing the wireless connection?

i find it rather seamless and rarely lose the wireless connection, and have never lost sound during a show. It does matter the order of setup or the board may freeze. I use a MacBook Pro connected via FireWire to the board. Both the MacBook and the iPad are connected via an airport express.

if the band is using their iPhones for monitors they shouldn't be changing any faders, and my practice had been, once I move to the iPad during a set, to continue making any changes on the iPad, so the lack of flying faders has not been an issue.

Re: Presonus question.

Strange. I've done over 100 shows on mine, 2-3 bands each gig, never a hiccup.

I used a Linksys router, and just switched to an Apple AirPort Extreme.

Yeah, I use a Belkin router, it's been flawless. If you attempt to use an ad hoc network you will have connection problems and I imagine that would be an issue with any board. It took me one gig to figure that out! And like Jay said, mixing with the iPad, I rarely even touch the faders during a show.

The iPhone app is only for monitors - no faders. It is set up on the Laptop and it is very easy to do. When you go to the setup page in the Personus software, you will see all phones attempting to connect. You assign them rights to their monitor once they have loggd on. Instructions are in the on line manual.

And Gosh Nick, who in the heck wouldn't prefer a Midas?

I'm not sure what you mean by "stored settings" in relation to iphone and ipad, but, yes, you must have a computer to use them, but don't most soundmen have a laptop at their gigs anyway? Anyway the computer issue been resolved on the new Personus 32 channel board and probably will be on all their future boards, but you still will need a router for the most reliable wireless connection and I think that is true with any board.

Re: Presonus question.

Presonus should really just put an Ethernet port on the back of their consoles. Or at least a USB option. FireWire gets to be a pain when trying to find a computer to support it when you can't afford a Mac.

Lol Chuck. You'd be surprised what we run into. A lot of people still prefer our Yamaha Ls9 just because the x32 has the name Behringer on it. Even though Midas designed them.

Midas did not design the X32.

Re: Presonus question.

They designed the preamps, and incorporated the Klark Eq's, processing, and the Lexicon effects that are all built into the console.
Lexicon effects are in Soundcraft mixers.

The decision to use building blocks of technologies owned by Midas or its divisions was Behringers, as owner of Midas.

They have put both on the new 32 channel baord. That's what I meant when I said the issue has been resolved. They really do need to come up with something new pretty fast though!

For most shows I do I don't have nor want a computer controlling my console. It is a computer already, and should be able to access and adjust all available parameters without assistance...IMO.

Right, but you asked for a way to secure constant network connection for the situation you were in. I think you got your answer.
