Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

Re: Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

I've tried several times eqing speakers by ear and I often don't like the result. While you eventually arrive at something usable, I find that the whole process is much faster, uses fever filters and sounds better if I do the initial eq by Smaart and then fine tune to taste. There is however nothing wrong doing it by ear alone, in fact I've sometimes wished I had that skill :)

Anybody with Smaart around you can get some help from?

Re: Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

Back when by ear was my only choice, I tended to sneak up on a semipermanent eq curve.

Start flat, do a couple shows where you eq as needed, then start to look for changes you are consistently making. Transfer those changes into the settings you are saving. Over a series of shows you will probably find 4 or 5 changes to become your curve.

It also helps to use pink noise, swept sine, and music as source signals. I liked to rotate through all of them, once again listening for things that consistently jump out between sources.

Another technique I tend to use is "bracketing" (yes I stole this from my days in the army doing call for fire). Lets say you are at unity gain and you feel you need a slight boost. I would start with a 6 db boost knowing that it is too much, but I want it to be enough to clearly hear a change. So this is too much, so I would go back to +1.5, on target or too little? If it is too little my next boost would be to +4.5 db. Then, if that is still too much, try +3db. You are constantly reducing the bracket while still making changes that are large enough to hear.

Re: Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

I would recommend that you look at the settings for this (or similar speakers) that are available as presets for the VSX26 DSP from the Peavey website.

In any event ... dip 2.2k a bit

Re: Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

Have the potential with a DBX driverack to refine the sound of these a little bit but still working on my ears and haven't any smaart tools.

Any one able to recommend a good EQ curve to make these sing?

Are you using subwoofers with these speakers? Also what are they being used for? Power available? I'd eq them differently for recorded music/live sound with no subs/live sound with subs/ vocals only or full on band.
Have you tried the RTA in the DBX unit and what target curve did you use when doing it?
I have a pair of the SP2X speakers which may sound pretty close. I have an eq set on my 01v96 but I don't have the mixer here right now.
I may set them up outside in a few weeks and look at them with Smaart. If I do I'll report back then if you think you may still need the information I've found about them.

EDIT: Looking at the SP2X Amplitude Response (1W 1m On-Axis) here on page 2

http://www.peavey.com/media/pdf/manuals/80304850.pdf

you can see some midrange peaks around 350hz to 600hz range as well as them being a little bright around 10k. I do take a fair amount from 350hz to 600hz as well as taking out some at 10k. Some people like the sound of a box that as the frequency increases the output decreases some. I'll look when I can at the eq in my mixer to see for sure my settings. Frequency and Q and amount of cut.

If you have a calibrated mic try the RTA and pink noise to see what is happening. I would not use the "auto" functions unless you don't mind killing headroom (they will give a hacked up EQ sometimes with some huge boosts). This will give you a place to start. As a general rule I lower the worst peaks and leave the dips alone. Obviously the measurement or measurements are only accurate for where the mic is located and the emptiness of the room at the time etc. but it should at least help you identify some problems that can be corrected with EQ.

The main thing to remember is you don't have to be perfectly flat, you just don't want any huge peaks.

Re: Parametric EQ settings for Peavey SP2G

The factory VSX26 preset for SP2X calls for

+4 dB @ 80 Hz 1.1 oct
-2@250Hz .6 oct
-2.5@ 500 Hz .5 oct
-3.9@2100Hz .5 oct
-3.6@ 3400Hz .5 oct
+8@ 13kHz .6

Handy to have. I have a show next weekend and I'll give them a try. I'll also see what I have been using on my desk. These were set by ear because I haven't had enough free time to set them with smaart. I realize the eq in the VSX and on my digital board are not the same I'm just interested if I found the same areas to adjust as peavey did.

Using this; Bandwidth in
octaves to Q chart

3.0 wide 0.404 low
2.0 0.667
1.5 0.920
1.0 1.414
2/3 2.145
1/2 2.871
1/3 4.318
1/6 8.651
1/12 small 17.310 high

I see .5 octave converts to a Q of about 2.871. Would that seem about right?
