I still see the Sony D50 with CCU and all the fixins a lot...however, the Panasonic HPX600 looks like a nice replacement camera to me.

I too see the DCX D50 out a lot.
The Sony HCX100 seems to be pretty standard when HD is needed. There might be better options now but its a nice and easy rental package from VER.

Cool I do some occasional IMAG and get some calls from what seem to be small productions or wedding videographers flying into town. Just trying to get some ideas on what people typically provide.

Just did a google search of those models. 20gs! Ummm nope. Let me rephrase my question a little
~:-D~:grin:. Is there anything worthwhile for the tasks I mentioned in the 3g neighborhood? I know DSLR's really have some quality but I am looking for more of a auto zoom etc for live stuff.

Have you considered PTZ cameras?
Also, DSLRs can't record/output video for extended periods of time…many are limited to 12 minutes or less.
I would just cross-rent from VER if possible…you know what you're getting, and you should still be able to make some profit on it. Video cameras are generally a losing proposition when it comes to ROI because technology advances faster than you can recoup what you invested.

I used to use the Canon XLH1 a lot which I believe is now replaced with a newer model, but offers the ability to record and output HD-SDI for IMAG. The stock lens also has enough zoom to use it for IMAG in most small to mid sized ballrooms. I see these go used for around 3000.

Hey Ben,
Check out the JVC 600. I just got one, the long lens is great. Dual SD slots are pretty sweet. I'm thinking of adding a few of the kid brother the 150 to my rental stock.

Ive seen them on occasion, too. They'll do in a pinch, but - as a camera operator - having a studio kit for IMAG is sure nice…even without the CCU.

In a pinch yes... we used to use it for budget IMAG... It is nice because it is HD, can record, and output HD-SDI. Its not a replacement for when a real studio camera is needed, but a solution to a clients budgetary needs. I've used it for Webcasts, IMAG, and archival recording. The biggest problem is that most times the tripod that goes out with this camera is not that great and camera moves can be kinda shaky, that and good stage lighting is needed... It really depends on what the client needs and expects to see.

I know lots of people who have the 150s. I'll likely add a couple to my inventory. Great simple little camera. Loaded with features.

Just a little add-on for this thread...
I'm currently working on a show with some cams I've never used (or heard of) before: the Hitachi HD1000. I never would have considered the brand, but I'm primarily an audio guy, so I don't tend to keep track of video things as much.
If you click on the link, the first picture with the sports lens, etc. is our setup (along with studio kits, fiber runs instead of Triax, CCUs, and CCU remotes). This should be a fun show; I'll try to post some pics after they get set up tomorrow (the past few days have been Quality Control and checking in gear thus far).
The camera body seems relatively light, and I don't think I'd mind shouldering it with a field package for doing ENG stuff.
