Been immersed in sound tech for 5 years, fully qualified Music Technologist, once I built a laser harp :-D. I'm a freelance live sound engineer predominantly (live sound is where my heart is), I can make a killer mix in a small room, I'm starting to build my chops on bigger rigs, my competitive edge is two-fold - I can Actually mix (my ears suggest most people in my town can't) and I'm affable. I subsidise my income by making live recordings, doing studio mixing (mostly of said live recordings) and hiring out small PAs.
Every tech in Adelaide says there's no money in tech - they are getting paid, I don't believe them! Half the techs give the impression they don't want to be there. So give me your job!
In the beginning I thought I wanted to be a rock star but it turns out I'm just as happy to be part of the crew behind the scenes making it happen.
