Digging deeper into the available reading on the subject, it could just be a case of "We don't want to play in this weather."

We'll probably never know for certain.

I wasn't there but if it was "just" weather, that was not your typical rain storm. When the same weather system rolled through my area (one state over), the 3' diameter concrete pipe in my rain ditch for run-off was within inches from filling up completely and backing up. I haven't seen that much water flowing across my property, in a few decades (if ever).

Of course rain accumulation does not correlate directly to wind loads, but it was not a ho-hum rain event, even for down here, where we are not unaccustomed to getting a little rain. The technical term for such a storm is "like a cow pissing on a flat rock". That storm was like a whole herd of cows....
