40" DJ riser - standard size ?

Hi,

I observed a rather interesting situation recently. DJ wanted a riser so-wide and so long; but stated "1m high". I understand this is 40" - well, 39 3/8 to be precise.

This is an unusual height in Oz. 900mm is common - 35 7/16 or close enough to 3 feet.

Out of interest, what are the standard heights for risers/DJ tables etc in the states ?

I'm trying to see if their request is as difficult to fullfill in the states as it is here.

And if you're reading between the lines, yes; 35 7/16 was not close enough, nor was the other option of 41 11/32 (1050)

Hi Andrew-

At our local Performing Arts Centre the risers (podia, dias, platforms) come in 8" increments. If the DJ wanted to stand upon a 40" platform, we'd bring in a 32" and an 8" and stack them. If you are looking at tables on which the DJ will set his playback machines, mixer, etc. the standard US height is 30".

The film/video grips use "apple boxes" and "pancakes" to make height adjustments. Perhaps those might be useful in the future; you can make them yourself.

Re: 40" DJ riser - standard size ?

Whoops sorry, I'm still tired from the weekend of shows.

It's not a riser it's a table. The table needed to be 40" above where the DJ stood. The tables supplied are the sort where you usually have 4 legs on wheels which slot in, and then a clamp closes over to maintain pressure. With the 900 legs there wasn't 100mm of play to clamp and be stable. With the 1050, too long to begin with.

Turns out the company supplying this sort of gear have it happen often enough that they always bring an angle grinder to the gig. In this case, for 5cm on each leg !

Seems to me most companies/venues/hotels here have 30cm, 60cm and 90cm, but other heights may appear sometimes.

Could you not use the 90cm and stick it on 4 flightcase lids?:)

Re: 40" DJ riser - standard size ?

We had fears that with all the other requirements like cross bracing of the table, he was intending to jump on the table and do something vigorous on it. That didn't happen though.

I did observe at one point what I thought was pretty impressive. MC climbed onto a stack of 4 B2's on their side.. then with some crowd prep from the other MC, jumped clear of the punter barrier about 1.5 m out from the subs and landed horizontally on the crowd.

Sometimes you make compromises and they aren't pretty! Here was the solution kludged together to satisfy a manager that measured the height of the deck with a measuring tape. It had to be exact and within the time-frame this was all we could piece together.

Oh, man, the starscape festival! That brings back memories. Dirty memories.

Ugh, I bought my first air compressor the day after my first starscape to clean all the cruft out of my amps. Couple years later the beach stage cost me 33 new faders for my LS9.

Seeing the clip lights on the current provider's vertec rig lit up solid for like 45 minutes was a good memory though.
