Hi,

I have a friend that has an A&H GL4000 in his Church and he asked for help. The "keeps blowing the power supply". I am not too familiar with this console and nor am I an electrician. Just curious what some possible causes (and solutions) could be? They like the mixer and it works fine for them aside from this issue.

Thanks,
Jared

Re: A&H GL4000 Power Supply issues

A supply that keeps getting repaired and blowing is likely to do so because of a short downstream causing it source too much current. Is it fuses that keep blowing? PSU components? The short can be something as simple as tiny DC decoupling capacitor that's failed with low DC resistance and causing power supply current to shunt to ground. I've seen happen several times with all sorts of electronics. It's a 10 cent part. It's basic circuit trouble shooting 101.

Re: A&H GL4000 Power Supply issues

I had this model console and encountered the same thing a couple of times. My issue, in each case, was a shorted full wave bridge rectifier in the PSU. The GL4000 was one of the largest consoles to use the RPS11 supply if I recall correctly. I replaced them with higher current versions and did not have further problems. That supply is convection cooled with bottom vents and if the vents are blocked or it is in a rack with no air movement, it will not cool as it should. Semiconductors do not like heat.

Greg's point about downstream electronics possibly drawing too much current is valid, but that was not the case in my situation.

Hope this helps.
