And it has a dent in the dome of the driver, and still sold for over $18,000. WOW! What am I missing on why this driver is worth so much?

I can't say why-except that most have been tossed out and there are very few of them left. I can't say for sure-but I really don't think it is because of the quality of the sound.
Anything (audio related) that has "Western electric" on it is like gold these days-to the right person.

It is a field coil speaker, super sought after. And the best sounding speaker I have ever heard was a field coil. Contemporary though.
I know a guy who tore out the sound systems from old schools and upgraded them.
Tossed a bunch of these field coil speakers in the trash. Oops.
