I need to expand inputs/outputs on a piece of gear and I only have the AES port left.

I'm not familiar in the wold of AES converters, basically I need 8 analog lines to AES and 8 channels of AES (4 stereo) to analog. AES connections on a Dsub is an advantage, but not necessary.

Any units in particular I should look at?

Andrew hit the nail on the head.

There's also an older piece that Lucid/Symetrix made called the ADA8824. It was also available with an optional lightpipe card. You may be able to find this box used for relatively low cost.

I recently used a Yamaha AD8-HR for the input side of your need. Since you also need output conversion, the RME unit referenced above would be my suggestion.
